Hi, I am totally new to Linux but installed Linux Mint 9 Isadore on my system because I read in a few reviews that the interface was very similar to windows. I do not have any complaints with Mint except that it does not recognise my data card. I currently have a dual boot system with XP and it works fine on windows. It is only when I log into Linux that I have a problem. I would be very grateful if someone could help me with this problem. Regards.

hmm. from my experince ubuntu works fine with tata photon plus. someone should have made available the settings for bsnl 3g card. sadness.

Help please. I have even considered removing mint and installing ubuntu, but am sceptical because mint is supposed to be based on ubuntu.

It is a bsnl terracom LW272 data card

One more thing, when I plug in the device, I get an error pop-up which says
DBus error
org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.NotFound: The given volume was not found

I would appreciate any help.

Before you do anything drastic like taking down your linux install, you might want to find a friend with Ubuntu. My guess is, it is a compatibility problem. Teracom works fine with win xp and ubuntu 8.04 hardy in my dual boot machine. Their documentation says it works for Ubuntu 10 also. BTW does your version accept ordinary usb pen-drives?

Hi Oldtimer, and yes, my memory stick works fine without any problems, and in after checking another forum I ran the script "sudo tail -f /var/log/messages" and got this in replyrex@linuxmint ~ $ sudo tail -f /var/log/messages[sudo] password for rex: Jul 20 16:14:36 linuxmint rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="737" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.Jul 20 16:14:38 linuxmint kernel: [ 900.000023] Machine check events loggedJul 20 16:14:51 linuxmint kernel: [ 912.344452] usb 1-8: USB disconnect, address 3Jul 20 16:15:20 linuxmint sudo: pam_sm_authenticate: CalledJul 20 16:15:20 linuxmint sudo: pam_sm_authenticate: username = [rex]after plugging in the data cardJul 20 16:15:20 linuxmint sudo: pam_sm_authenticate: username = [rex]Jul 20 16:16:14 linuxmint kernel: [ 995.476017] usb 1-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4Jul 20 16:16:14 linuxmint kernel: [ 995.613221] usb 1-8: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choiceJul 20 16:16:14 linuxmint kernel: [ 995.615975] scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devicesJul 20 16:16:15 linuxmint usb-modeswitch: switching 19d2:2000 (HSPA,Incorporated: HSPA WCDMA Technologies MSM) I don't know what it means, but hope it helps. Comparing the two logs, I guess that the line containing "usb-modeswitch" in your log is critical
Normally, when I insert my card, Ubuntu mounts my card as a drive and I get the BSNL Icon on my desktop.
Then I have to open applications>>internet>>joinair. This is the software that helps to connect to the internet. When this runs, presumably it does the usb-modeswitch which means, it unmounts the bsnl disk-drive, and now makes it work like the modem. Thereafter, I can't read the files on my device until I close Joinair and replug my modem.
See this for example

Is it likely that your drivers and all have been automatically installed? In which case you should be able to see the "joinair" icon in your internet applications menu.
This app does not automatically pop-up when I plug in the modem, unlike in windows. In Ubuntu I have to run that manually.

Your posts have given me another opportunity to look into the insides of linux. As my posts would show, I am also somewhat of a newbie there. However, I am reading up and will share my findings with you. Do post your responses here.

Thanks for the updates Oldtimer. I looked for joinair, and even ran a search for it, but it didn't show up, so I'm guessing that it has not been installed. Please let me know what I have to do.Thanks Kanishka, but your post was incomplete. I tried looking up qinternet anyway, but the page in suse linux's website was empty.
