broadband support

hello i have taken a new broadband connection named as in2 broadband and the cable they are providing will be connected directy to my laptop"s ethernet card or modem port whatever ..i would like to know as i will not be using any external modem or router ,my data wil be safe? i mean my isp can see what am surfing or downloading including my internet history ?? any kind of help would be great >>should is stick to it or buy myself a decent router >>>>> it will maKE any diff ???

Have a good firewall and virus protection and you should be alright. No guarantees though.

Any ISP in India logs activity for at least 7 months, so yes. But they can't "hack" your system and see what you've browsed till now if that's what you're asking.

Just watch that the cable operator doesn't set your network to be "Home" or "Work" connection as this basically lowers Windows' defenses and helps greatly with the spread of malware.

I've seen installers do this on numerous occasions and it sucks having to chew out these poor guys in front of customers.

It provides an extra layer and may help with other things but there is no guarantee. The guarantee of security that anyone can realistically give you is to tell you that if your data is so important, keep it on a machine that never connects to the internet. Inside a safe. In a hole so deep you'd be half-way to the opposite side of the world (which people on the west coast of India should be somewhere off the cost of Peru/Northern Chile).

hey mgcarley thanks for the valuble info it helped me a lot lol and am not much worried about data i have a valid antivirus and firewall just am new to this broadband scenario earlier i have a 3g broadband connection which was quite costly but safe
i was just worried about my surfing activities ,incase they can actually see what site am surfing and torrent downloads nothing much well..... thanks for the information again

Yes, they can see. But your activity is unlikely to be flagged/nobody will care unless you download some kiddie porn or slag off the Gandhi family or something.
