Bharti Airtel gets DTH licence, to invest Rs 150 cr

New Delhi, September 23: Bharti Airtel said it has got licence to start Direct-To-Home services in the country and announced an investment of Rs 150 crore in the first phase to launch nation-wide operations, a move that would bring in much required competition in the DTH segment.
"We have received the licence and plan to launch pan-India services by the first quarter of next financial year," N Arjun, head of DTH operations, Bharti Airtel, told PTI.
Company officials said Bharti would be investing Rs 150 crore in the initial phase on infrastructure for which its has chosen Tendberg Television, a subsidiary of Sweedish telecom equipment major Ericsson.
Bharti Telemedia, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, handling DTH operations, will use a range of Tandberg Television's solutions including the iSIS 8000 IP head-end and MPEG-4 AVC standard definition encoders, Arjun said.
The system is one of the first and finest satellite DTH platforms in the world enabling increasing transponder capacity and potentially doubling the amount of available channels, he said.
The DTH services will be launched nationally across India and Bharti is setting up a state-of-the-art infrastructure near Gurgaon (Haryana) for the purpose of uplinking and broadcast. By using the latest MPEG-4AVC video compression, and IP tenchnologies, Bharti can cost-effectively deliver more channels in less bandwidth, while still maintaining high quality pictures, officials said.

At this rate, by year end 2008 there will be around 12 sources from where we will be able to get TV contents. 1, DD channels through antenna (hope it is still there...)2, Dear old cablewalla (s?) 3, DD direct plus - DTH4, Dish TV - DTH5, Tata Sky - DTH6, Sun Direct - DTH7, Reliance blue magic - DTH8, Bharti - DTH9, BSNL/MTNL - IPTV10, Airtel - IPTV11, Reliance - IPTV12, Tata - IPTV (I read somewhere that Tata also has plans for IPTV). Man, I will be totally confused on whom to choose.... 🙂

The 50 million customers span mobile, broadband and telephone services, with wireless segment contributing as much as 96 per cent (47.99 million) of the total base. It plans to make considerable investments in network expansion to establish presence in all towns and over five lakh villages across India by 2010, thereby covering 95 per cent of the country's total population.

Yah, but u people will also agree that DTH provider should also have some content of it's own, or else it will be troublesome incase of wars of channels.. still i am waitng for bhart dth

There seems to be a difference of times here. Some source say end of 2007 and some say end of 2008. Who knows when it will actually come out.
