MUMBAI: Bharti Airtel, India’s largest telecom company, will launch services in Sri Lanka on January 12, becoming the fifth cellular player in the island nation. It will simultaneously roll out 2G and 3G services in Sri Lanka. A Bharti Airtel spokesperson confirmed the launch but declined to divulge more. The company bagged licence for Sri Lanka in early 2007 and hired Amali Nanayakkara as the CEO in October. Bharti Airtel is likely to offer lower tariff rates and change the market dynamics as it has done in India. “Airtel is looking at liberating customers by offering high quality services at reasonable prices,” said a source familiar with Airtel’s strategy for the Sri Lankan market. Ahead of Bharti Airtel’s entry, other operators have slashed tariff rates and are offering discounts with cellular connections.
