BCCI News & Updates

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to blacklist Zee Sports and Ten Sports:thumb: in view of the ongoing fracas between BCCI and the Subhash Chandra-owned ICL.

The decision would mean that both the sport broadcasters would not be allowed to participate in the bidding of the broadcast rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) — BCCI's version of the Twenty20 game. This would mean that the fight for the rights would be restricted to only three players — Nimbus, ESPN-Star and Sony.

The reason for blacklisting the two channels is quite clear. A senior BCCI official said that Zee Sports defaulted in not renewing its bank guarantee for the neutral venues contract that was awarded to them by the BCCI earlier this year.

"There's no question about either Zee Sports or Ten Sports bidding for the IPL rights. Zee Sports is in any case officially blacklisted by the board, and Ten Sports automatically falls under the same category on account of its partnership with Zee," a senior BCCI official told ET.

When contacted, Zee Sports CEO Himanshu Mody said, "We have sent them an arbitration notice for the cancellation of the neutral venues contract. The matter in our opinion is sub-judice." However, Taj TV (Ten Sports) CEO Chris McDonald said, "I'm not aware of any such move by the BCCI."

Having said that, Ten sports recently bagged the Zimbabwe and South Africa cricket board rights for the next one year. However, with ICL rubbing all the international boards as well as the International Cricket Control (ICC) the wrong way, the partnership with Zee might pose a problem for Ten Sports in the long run.

However, a Zee Sport source said, "Zee is just a 50% partner, and the management control still lies with Ten Sports. So BCCI does not have any real legal ground to disqualify Ten Sport from bidding."

BCCI asks Nimbus to pay Rs 130 cr by Friday
25 Oct, 2007, 0101 hrs IST

MUMBAI: The stand-off between the cricket board and Nimbus Sports has reached a turning point, with BCCI setting a deadline for the sports management company to clear its dues. On Tuesday, BCCI shot a letter to Harish Thawani, chairman, Nimbus Sports, to pay up Rs 130-crore dues, although it is still unclear what payments BCCI is referring to.

BCCI has threatened to invoke bank guarantees if Nimbus fails to make the payment by Friday. BCCI sources confirmed to ET that the letter has been sent.

Nimbus is yet to pay 50% of the fee for the recent Australia-India series, which works out to nearly Rs 100 crore. Besides, it is yet to pay the 50% upfront payment for the forthcoming Pakistan tour.

When contacted by ET, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah neither denied nor confirmed the development. “This is a confidential matter between the board and Nimbus,” is all that he would say. Nimbus Sports chairman Harish Thawani said: “All our payments to BCCI are up to date.”

BCCI sources said the dispute could affect the domestic cricket telecast, too, if Nimbus fails to pay up before the Friday deadline. “BCCI may take a relook at the contract for the domestic cricket rights that Nimbus bagged in 2005. If Nimbus manages to cough up the money, things will be ironed out,” said the source.

Nimbus bagged the telecast rights for domestic cricket and all international matches played at home for $612 million, or Rs 4,500 crore. But it got a reduction of Rs 247 crore in lieu of the losses it suffered due to the encryption row with Doordarshan.

In May this year, the Afro-Asia Cup cricket tournament suffered a major setback, with Nimbus pulling the plug on match telecast.

The company, which had bagged the television rights for the inter-continental event from the Asian Cricket Council, said the relevant terms of the contract would not apply anymore since the matches were originally scheduled for last year. However, ACC claimed that Nimbus had defaulted in its payments, and hence the contract was terminated.

Nimbus is now negotiating with BCCI asking for a further reduction in the license fee, claiming that the cricket board’s new initiative — the Indian Premier League — would materially affect its contract with BCCI. Nimbus has asked for a 20% ($120 million) reduction in the license fee. The cricket board has, however, rejected the demand.

Nimbus wants BCCI to improve facilities for TV coverage:hysterical:
MUMBAI: Nimbus Sport, broadcast rights holders for BCCI-conducted ties upto March 31, 2010, has asked the Indian Cricket Board to provide improved facilities for its crew at the venues hosting India's home Test series against Australia and Test and ODI rubbers against England.

In a letter to BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah, the channel has pointed out difficulties experienced by its crew in the past, while covering matches at some of the venues that have been earmarked for the two series, because of lack of proper facilities.

It wanted the BCCI to address the infrastructure issues "to facilitate better coverage of the matches" to be held later this year.

The complaints range from TV crew's access to the control rooms, small sizes of the control rooms and commentators' box sizes and water dripping from air conditioners to heights and positions of camera platforms, lack of enough toilets and leaking sewage pipes at some centres.

There are some harsh comments about some of the centres. For example in Guwahati, the centre which is to play host to one of seven ODIs against England, TV control room was "non-existent", according to a copy of the letter with PTI.

The letter has also raised the issue of a sewage pipe above the control room in Guwahati of having got choked last time which "started leaking all over the control room and live power cables" that made it difficult to work "in an inhuman" and "very dangerous condition".
