Attempt to ban VPNs in India

this is why people use VPN. the best they would know is that the person was using a vpn. but they won't know what he was doing while on vpn. all data sent and received would be to/from that vpn's ip. this is why government hates vpns.

fact remains, even without vpns, most data transmitted online is still fairly secure and encrypted. most of the web is now https. isps can still check the domains you are visiting but not exact pages. TLC ECH would prevent even that and this is why some countries have already blocked this encrypted traffic. looks like china also blocks tls 1.3 on their national firewall.

this is why pegasus is so useful for the governments. they do not have to monitor internet data. they can just monitor the device. or even plant evidence on these devices.

If ISP is tracking assigned ip's then won't they know about our activities on the internet. Can the govt claim access from such isp's if they think someone with a certain ip has gone rogue.
Yes the government can. Btw just linking IP to owner isn’t really tracking. It’s just maintaining accountability on the part of the ISP issuing the IP address. The IP is owned by the ISP and having a record of who is issued what IP when, is just for their own accountability. Anything beyond this basic requirement is tracking. And unfortunately it does happen now a lot more that equipment to do it has got cheaper. Earlier it was very expensive to do it widely. I’m referring to India. The US has been doing it for decades.

India's Anti-VPN Plan a Threat to Privacy, Internet Freedom: Experts
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs wants VPNs to be blocked. It has asked the Indian government to obstruct access to virtual private networks, alleging that such services enable 'criminals to remain anonymous online.'
With a VPN, you can maintain your privacy, bypass location-gated content, get around filtered networks, and lots more.
Everybody should be transparent except for government and it's employees.

well they did get rid of tinted windows on all vehicles after the incident in delhi many years ago. that alone must have caused immeasurable damage to environment if we look at the bigger picture.

@Sushubh you mean absence of tinted windows leads to getting inside of cars getting warmer?
I have no idea about cars so just asking..

Indian government is incompetent - Congress and BJP and everyone else.

So, these blocks will be a pathetic attempt and there will be numerous ways to bypass it.

I personally use VPN 24/7 because I don't trust the technical illiterates working behind the scenes of my ISP

Considering the creepy levels of many of my fellow Indians, damn, whoever is leading this attempt to create great wall of China, would be uploading all nudes of indians to pornhub eventually and there will be rape committees in the future.

Exclusive: Indian government looks for solution to bypass and trace those using VPNs

Reasoning that cybercriminals often use virtual private networks (VPNs), the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is looking for a solution that can subvert VPNs and can trace IP addresses of users accessing this technology. This comes months after a parliamentary committee report recommended that VPNs be banned. VPNs encrypt one’s internet traffic and one’s online identity.

The ministry in its ‘problem statement’ for Smart India Hackathon 2022, a contest where students will participate to work on such ‘problems’, said that the solution should —
  • Determine if an IP is actual or a proxy/VPN IP address
  • Trace the actual IP address
  • Provide details of the VPN service provider

EU GDPR is taken as a torchbearer of privacy as a "fundamental right" and then you see them trying to pass laws to monitor comms.

Your argument is silly. GDPR to an extent was a positive step in improving privacy and they should be praised for it. This is dumb and they'll get flak for it. One thing does not negate the other. While they were seen as a torchbearer for privacy when they passed gdpr, Now that'll change. If I had more time to look into this, I'll probably check if its the same people involved in both efforts or if that has changed.

@ishanjain28 you don't seem to have got what I am trying to say. Dont you think the GDPR and the proposed law will be contrary to each other? And as for being dumb attempt in the EU that's precisely the point i am trying to make! Now let's see what happens.
