Assembling a PC for the first time,have some queries about ESD

So,in every site they talk about electrostatic discharge(ESD).But when I asked my friends about ESD who have already assembled quite a lot PC's,they said that no precaution like this is necessary.Now,I will surely hold the hardware from the sides only but what are your opinon on ESD ?
 
It is recommended to touch a metal object before assembling , i do it before assembling
 
As long as you maintain zero potential by continuously touching some unpainted metal surface and don't let too much static electricity from building up (avoid wearing wool, try to be standing while assembling) you should be fine.
