iPhone Maker Foxconn in Talks to Build First Apple Plant in India | NDTV Gadgets
Foxconn is in talks to manufacture Apple's iPhone in India, government officials said, in a move that could lower prices in the world's No.3 smartphone market where the US firm trails Samsung Electronics and local players.
India could help Foxconn mitigate accelerating wage inflation in China, where it makes the majority of iPhones, and base production sites closer to markets where its key clients want to grow.
Lower production costs could also help Foxconn keep hold of Apple orders amid intensifying competition with nimble manufacturing rivals such as Quanta Computer.
I really doubt it would happen...

Assembling is not a big issue here in India. Manufacturing of critical components usually is. Intel once planned to establish a chip factory in India. They gave up eventually after realizing how bad the infra is here in India.

In a meeting with all employees, our company's CEO mentioned that how friendly Chinese local govt are, saying that they give full infrastructure including building, electricity, internet connection and PCs to work for free for 6 months to new company who wants to start manufacturing in China. Similar facility would never be offered by Indian govt or local govts in India, hence "Make in India" may not achieve success like China.
(Not sure what he said about Chinese facility is really true).

Apple Inc to flourish if it pours funds into India - The Economic Times

Apple seeking relaxed labelling rules so it doesn’t have to put product-related information directly on its devices to avoid cluttering up their minimalist design. The company also wants tax incentives — a demand that is being examined by the finance ministry.

“They have just sent it (the request). We will examine it,” said the official, requesting anonymity. “There are two things: First, there are almost 40 mobile manufacturing units (in India). We don’t want to disturb them. Second, we will have to see how much volume they will put out, how many jobs they will create,” the official said.

“Their factory in China gives jobs to 10 lakh people. If they say they will put five factories in India and give employment to 10 lakh people or say we will give you Rs 5,000 crore of excise duty, we may think about it (Apple’s demands),” the official said.

since ft is usually hard to read... tons of blogs basically copied the useful content.

He suggested its engineers learn the art of jugaad — a way of “making do” or transcending obstacles. “Because everything in India is an obstacle,” he said.
