Airtel introduces Voice SMS for customers

Airtel, India’s leading mobile service today announced the introduction of Voice SMS for customers, a yet another innovative value added service for customers in Karnataka. Simple and easy to use, the service opens up an exciting new way to connect with near and dear ones. The service works on all handsets, creating a new mode of communication for all Airtel users, in addition to the conventional text message service. For the first time ever, Airtel customers in Karnataka can send Voice SMS in KANNADA.

All set to revolutionize the mobile messaging industry, Voice SMS is a personalized voice message service that enables users to send message in their own voice and in the language of their choice. The service is based on the ‘talk and listen’ messaging format, vis-a-vis the ‘type and read’ text message service provided by SMS.

Announcing the launch of this innovative service, Mr. Venkatesh V, CEO, Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Karnataka, said, “The launch of Voice SMS in Karnataka is yet another innovative service from Airtel. We firmly believe that the service will enjoy an appeal that cuts across demographies.

Airtel Voice SMS lends to the freedom of expression, a whole new dimension as it cuts across language and knowledge barriers. This would go a long way in making it a powerful tool of expression for users, who are not as well versed with the English alphabet. We are confident that this service will make a positive difference to the way our customers engage with near and dear ones on the mobile”.

Airtel Voice SMS provides a new platform for youth to communicate with their peers and also useful for people who struggle while typing a text message. Now with Voice SMS all Airtel customers in Karnataka can send messages to any mobile in Kannada, Hindi and English. Each Voice SMS will be charged at just 75 paise per SMS and can be sent to customers on any mobile network, at the same rate.

Voice SMS: How to use?

The service is easy to use and, compared to SMS, adds an emotional dimension to messaging. To send a message, the user dials "*" followed by the recipient's mobile number and leaves a message up to 30 seconds long. The service then sends an SMS notification to the receiver, who dials "*0*" to hear the message for free.

Airtel customers on receiving a Voice SMS can hear it free of cost. The Voice SMS can be stored in the archives too. To retrieve the Voice SMS from the archive the user can press * 1* for listening to the message. Customer can forward / reply to the Voice SMS by choosing the option which plays on IVR after Voice SMS is played out.

When the message is sent to a non-Airtel number the non-Airtel user can retrieve the Voice SMS by keying a 10 digit number, post which he will be taken to the IVR.
