Hi Guys,I recently took BSNL Broad Band Connection, but I feel it is not that good, because they promised that they will be 256 Kbps, but when I test iit through McCafee Speedometer I only get about 190 kbps as whole and to my system it gets 20 odd kBps, what does that mean. I have a very little knowlodege about all these things, could anyone please enlighten me on this. Is this abnormal, do I need to complain about it,Thanks.

256 Kbps (Kilo bits per second) = 32 KBps (Kilo Bytes per second) [256 / 8 =32]

What u r getting according to McCafee is 190 Kbps i.e. approx 24 KBps., while u get 20 KBps using other methods, which r close. Now, this speed is quite low compared to what many of us get. I get 30 to 32 KBps consistently. Check what others in your area get. Your distance (actual wire distance) from the exchange matters. If others close to u r getting good speed, u have to chk ur wire and any other disturbances. Otherwise, it might be due to problem at the xchange or due to distance.

Your speed is 445.92 Kbps (Kilobits per second)
Your speed is 510.7 Kbps (Kilobits per second)
Your speed is 534.23 Kbps (Kilobits per second)
Your speed is 471.56 Kbps (Kilobits per second)

What does this indicate for a 256 connection. I mean is this speed justified or should this be higher.

I have obtained similar results during short tests. Even when downloading other s/w @20KBps, it said my download speed is 296.9 Kbps, way above 256. I think short bursts of speed shown in the tests are misleading. The true (average) speed would be indicated during a sustained download by softwares like DU Meter or NetMeter. You can try downloading, say, a 100MB file from a source which is capable of serving at speeds of more than 256 Kbps. I believe, the average speed would hover around 256 Kbps if ur connection is good.

The site u mentioned also says as below -

"This test checks throughput between your computer and our network to the Internet. This test does not check sync rate (the speed or capacity of the DSL connection from the Network Interface Device at your home to the DSL Access Multiplexing or Remote Gateway equipment in our network). Only a trained technician using special equipment can test the sync rate. Throughput is not necessarily an indication of sync rate. "

Try the global test in the same site at http://indiaspeed.mfhosting.com/global.html . This would show you lesser speeds.

Truely said, the speeds here have been 218-262 at each time I clicked. So the average can be taken at a genuine speed of close to 256.
