Ferrari test new A1GP car at Fiorano
27/05/08

While the famous Scuderia's race team prepared for the Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari technicians at the weekend were also busy closer to home.

At the Maranello-based team's own local test circuit at Fiorano in Italy, the new Ferrari-powered A1GP car - which is based on the 2004 Formula One single seater that was driven to the title by Michael Schumacher - was run for the first time.

Ferrari test driver Andrea Bertolini, who in the past has been central to the squad's F1 development duties, was at the controls, and a press document revealed that the "shakedown results (were) very encouraging" for the new car.

"The team will now undertake an intensive test programme at both the Fiorano test track and the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola," the statement added.

A1GP - Rule changes ahead of new season
Extra pits stops and points allocation changes
11/08/08

The pressure will be even greater for the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport national teams when they go to Mugello, Italy for the start of season four in September.

An extra mandatory pit stop is among the changes to the series’ Sporting Regulations planned to make the racing even more exciting with the extra stop having to be taken in the A1GP Sprint Race between laps four and eight.

"“We never stop looking for ways of improving the action on the track," stated series Chairman Tony Teixeira. "The two pit stops in the Feature Race have proved to be the really high pressure points of the events. We felt an additional one would not only add another variable into the Sprint Race mix, but also give the crews another opportunity to display their team work."

"When we sat down to discuss ways of improving the series from every viewpoint this was a popular addition. However, we have also made other changes that will give the teams greater flexibility in certain areas,” he added.

The unique qualifying format has also proved very popular with the spectators and to increase the drama and tension each of the four sessions have now been reduced from 15 to ten minutes with the same five minute break between each.

Here the added pressure is on the drivers, as the Sprint Race grid is determined from each driver’s best time taken from sessions one and two and the Feature Race grid from sessions three and four.

Nations can and do use the Friday to try out young or less experienced drivers in the two Rookie and Developing Nation Sessions. This popular addition will continue, but now there will be no age limit and the gap between the two 30 minute sessions has increased from five to 20 minutes.

The duration of the Sprint Race, with its rolling start, has also been increased from 19 to 24 minutes plus one lap, while the Feature Race, from a standing start, remains at 69 minutes plus one lap. However, now the points’ allocation for the shorter race has also been reduced with them only going to the top eight on the scale of 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. The Feature Race remains the same with the top ten receiving points on the scale of 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

India to skip opening race of new A1GP season:mad:
01 Oct, 2008

NEW DELHI: It was a race against time that A1GP has lost. To assemble 25 cars on the grid in Zandvoort on Sunday, just 45 days after the A1GP Powered by Ferrari car passed its crash test, was always going to be an ambitious ask. Unfortunately, India is one of those teams that will not be racing this weekend. Team India confirmed the developments on Tuesday.

"As you are aware, for the new season of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, A1 Team India planned to participate in the opening event at Zandvoort on October 4-5, 2008. Due to circumstances beyond the control of A1 Team India, there has been an unfortunate delay in the ‘build programme’ of the new A1GP cars, and the Team India car has been affected. As a result, the team will not be able to take part in the Zandvoort race," CEO Andaleeb Sehgal said in a statement.

Driver Narain Karthikeyan, who was in the UK, is on his way back home. The series set itself a tight schedule with less than 11 months to design, build and test the new car and make sure all the teams received identical machinery. Any delay in the schedule was always going to impact on the ability to deliver to all the teams.

The first round of the 2008-09 at Mugello was moved following a delay in the ‘build schedule’ of the new chassis.

After dashing rumours that the season opener in the Netherlands could be non-points race, as at least five teams aren’t expected to receive their cars in time to compete in the event, the organisers have announced a revised points system, reducing the advantage for teams that are participating. Now, the championship will count each team’s best nine scores from 10 rounds. Every nation will be able to drop both the sprint and feature race scores from their worst event.

"With the recent change of the points scoring system that allows a team to drop its worst event score, India’s chances of challenging for the World Cup of Motorsport title will not be adversely affected by missing the Zandvoort event. The situation we find ourselves in is unfortunate, but the morale of the team is high and we are focused on competing at the next race at Chengdu, China and through the rest of the season," Sehgal added.

This week’s test at Snetterton, scheduled for October 1-2, will now take place on Thursday and Friday, with the first practice session (which has been extended to one hour 50 minutes) taking place at Zandvoort on Saturday.

India is not fit for hosting Expensive Sports... Even in the Singapore GP, roads were uneven and had lots of bumps... Now in India, F1 car will jump upside down in street circuits :p

heh. money can buy you anything. the thing is. india does not know what it requires to host a formula-1 race and profit from it. government intervenes too much and i bet it would result in a loss making venture for any private company to get into the hosting of the f1 race. especially in or around delhi. the infrastructure is not there. we dont seem prepared for the commonwealth games, let alone a formula-1.
