I just blogged about my experience with the service. I think they suck. Here's the complete story.

excerpt: buying Tata Sky digicomp and services was like buying a car which I cannot run on any fuel except the one supplied by the car maker. I must keep buying the fuel from them because if I stop, they can take away my car for which I paid in full[/b]

Now thats how you write a review, what am i giving up in return for what i paid for. But only an end user will do this, no way will you see this in the newspapers or other paid for publications.Tho given the lack of competition, is it any wonder they have such restrictive conditions, its what early adopters put up with. The rain issue is not very clear, lets see the reports after this yrs monsoon. The problem here is being caught between a rock (cable wallahs) & a hard place (tata sky & dish). It's still early days here as far as DTH is concerned, 3 yrs from now, one hopes things will be better, which i guess is the minimum time i still have to put up with my cable wallah and the wonderfully realiable service they proviide :p

Somehow I don't think that clause 11.3 would authorize them to take your STB at the time of deactivation. What I can imagine is that they try to take your STB unless you are assertive and don't let them, and threaten them with legal consequences. (I would find it hard to believe that they would win in court over such an issue). But regardless or whether they would be legally in the right or wrong, the bottom line is that you are right in pointing out that this may become an issue that potentially is used to harass customers, and for that TataSky deserves a wag of the finger.

Thanks for your blog! It's definitely good work! The sad part is that the average person would not see it.

Thank you guys! I'm getting more support than I imagined. Amish, I've updated the blog to add that bit about AMC charges. Shushubh, thanks for posting the link on Sify blog. Thanks Dips. We should force these guys to change the ridiculous terms.Blr_P, the rain issue is totally confirmed. Look up tata Sky reviews on mouthshut and comments on my blog, lots of people have had that problem. Vebmetal, exactly that's the point...I might be able to keep the digicomp on deactivation - in fact their staff member agreed to give it in writing that they would not. But the point is, they are making me sign under a clause that says I agree with them taking it away. How ridiculous could it get? Besides, even if I'm able to keep it, what's the point since they will certainly take the dish away - this was confirmed to me by customer support. Thanks for the kind words about the blog.

all valid points by orangehues. but fact of the matter is what are the options to tata sky? DishTV and local cablewalla. equally bad i wd say.i spoke to customercare. if one is not happy with tatasky, one can always sell the digicomp in the open market. there is no charge for changing the ownership. the buyer though has to pay the Rs. 1000 installation charges.at least now we have options to the local cable - 2 DTH services and 1 IPTV. i have got nothing against them monitoring our viewing patterns and delivering highly focussed ads. better than getting junk ads that have no connection to our needs.orangehues, what have u taken up after cancelling tatasky?

One of my cousins worked in Orbit - A gulf DTH company & the rules were pretty much the same - including the privacy ones - so not suprised to see them here too. Not that I support them - but for me this info is nothing new.

my only problem is a locked up STB. i should be free to get my own choice of STB and i should be able to change providers without changing the hardware... dish i understand but the freaking STB? duh.
