It is probably the only way India can have cheaper high speed 8-10mbps+ broadband at home
you can check here how BPL works http://computer.howstuffworks.com/bpl.htm
any number of ISP's can offer broadband services on powerline at different frequencies.
isp's wont need to install wires at homes which will save cable costs hence
cheaper broadband service.
With BPL broadband service can reach remote places where its very hard
or impossible to offer broadband via dsl, cable, wireless or any other means.

The BPL modem simply plugs into the wall and then into your computer. These modems are capable of speeds comparable to DSL or cable modems.

In a country where electricity goes out 12 hours average a day.
Yeah powerline internet will be awesome! 😛leasantry:

not in cities at least, only at villages in most cases.
electricity rarely goes out for 12 hrs in cities as far i know.

You would only get support for 2 hours every day and only if you know the local SDO.

Billing would be only on their counters. For 2 hours on week days for 4 days every month. Please bring exact change to prevent inconvenience to them.

i think in this case electric company will be only lending power lines to the isp nothing else.
so isp can send signals over low voltage power lines from their fiber optics.
if anyone it will be your isp who be paying your electric company for lending the power lines.
internet signals will be there in power lines whether you have internet or not.
and you will be paying internet bill only to your isp, not the electric company.

interference seems to be the only problem that's keeping it from becoming available everywhere.
if that issue gets resolved sometime in future, it will be great.
