What makes core2duo more interesting than the competition ?for a few yrs now, we heard how AMD was preferred.have intel managed to claw their way back ?

oh yeah. all the articles i have read, core 2 duo kicks anything similar from amd in the market.and then my pc hardware guy does not really prefer to deal in amd processors. says that the backend support is slow and cumbersome...

that's what i want to know. the best i know is that quad cores are out from both the companies. amd's previous generation chips are the best value for money deal but when it comes to dual core, intel has a solid advantage.maybe i am wrong. that's what i want to know... what is a good buy at this time... core 2 duo should be much cheaper in 2-3 months as i heard that intel would stop selling their P4 processors completely... but i don't think i would be waiting for that time.

You mean 4*4 from amd as quadcore? Its a Frankenstein hackjob more than a pentium D.core 2 duo e6400 + p965 + 1G should be nearly 25k or perhaps a bit more.but i would've preffered e6600 for the extra 2Mb cache, assuming no overclocks. Also DDR2 667Mhz (or higher :p ) would be preffered..Amd just moved to 65nm process, those would go mainstream by new year.Amd has its quadcore coming by h2 07,its called 'barcelona'.there are a lot of changes for amd in coming years, its rumoured like new sockets.and amd says thier first fusion cpu would be out by 2008 which would probably have HT3.On intel side the idea is clear,go for the die shrink (45nm by 2007 h2),add more cores.New architecture is only due by 2008,again rumoured to be fusion architecture and lot radical than current designs by some central interconnect like HT.

Avoid Asus motherboards since the newer ones with SATA might have problems with Linux...Try to get an original Intel MB if possible... everything including the networking/onboard graphics will be supported (unless you want a graphics card, then get nvidia, not ati)Edit:No, dont pay attention, maybe newer linux releases might work anyhows, better to do research, like looking up hardware compatibility lists, online forums for compatibility info...PS: My laptop just died yesterday, so I guess I will wait for Core 2 Duo laptops to come down in price a bit before getting a new one!

Hehe same situation here sushubh! I too was researching about Core 2 Duo systems...Go in for the DG965RY Intel original board with E6400 Core 2 Duo processor and DDR2 512x2 ( 1GB ) of RAM! It should cost you around 22000-24000INR. If you have some extra cash go in for the E6600 processor.

i got this suggestion from everywhere. but considering these new age processors should get cheaper in the next couple of months, i might delay acquiring this machine if i can find a cheap replacement motherboard for my existing p4 1.8. otherwise e6400 it is...

Same here sushubh. The cost is waay too high right now and the thing is that the board is in high demand so rarely available :(
