Seems its pretty easy to make external hard disks ourself - many people seem to have done it.Requires only the normal hard disk we get in shops & the external casing which is to be bought seperately.Have any of you guys bought the external casing in India? How much does it cost?Is it as simple as connecting the wires supplied with the casing to the HD & then plugging it to the USB port for the PC to recgnise it as "External Harddisk"?Thanks.(Do post pictures if you own one)

It costs approx 750 in Bombay.

yes, its quite easy to make ur own external harddisk. U simply have to connect the wires in the case to the harddrive and make it master from the jumper settings.

However one disadvantage that these drives have compared to the 2.5 inch drives is that u have to run an external power cable to the drive (included in the case) which makes it less convenient that the USB powered ones.

Cases are of 2 types 1) with fan and 2) without fan. Category 1 would cost upwards of Rs 1000/- while cat 2 is available from rs 450/- onwards.

Gemini is the most widely available brand here.

Thanks for the info guys.

What kind of hard disks require external fans also? Is it something optional or does it depend on the model of the hard disk.

Just a way to dissipate the heat faster..but i think a non-fan one should work as well
