Red Hat has announced the availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) Beta 2.
The company says that RHEL 5, which will be released in early 2007, will provide the latest open source technologies for improved performance, security, and flexibility.
Red Hat claims that RHEL 5 will deliver comprehensive integration that will significantly raise the bar for commercial-strength Linux virtualization in an x86 server environment.
The new version's biggest change is the inclusion of Xen virtualization software, which lets a machine run multiple operating systems simultaneously to increase efficiency. It also includes support for quad-core processors, better Laptop support, and improvements to the SELinux software.
RHEL 5 Beta 2 incorporates a new, fully integrated server and storage virtualization solution. This release enables an integrated virtualization solution by coupling server virtualization with Red Hat s clustering support.
Tim Yeaton, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Solutions, Red Hat, said, "The release of RHEL 5 Beta 2 is a great indicator for customers on what to expect in our next release. Integrating technologies such as virtualization is challenging and exciting, and the resulting product will enable customers to utilize their systems more effectively than ever before. We continue to drive down costs by optimizing performance, manageability, and availability. Other customer-driven innovations, such as security, are inherent to our development model."
Meanwhile, customers and partners can now download RHEL 5 Beta 2 to deploy pilots for production environments.

Asus India has launched the Asus Lamborghini Notebook in the Indian market, a limited edition model based on the partnership between Asus and automobile manufacturer, Automobili Lamborghini.
The Asus-Lamborghini VX1 notebook series, according to the two companies, is the ultimate fusion of Information Technology and Automobile Technology.
Andrew Tsui, Managing Director of Asus India, said, "The Asus Lamborghini notebook captures the true spirit of automobile lovers and technology enthusiasts who are keen to own unparalleled luxury. This limited edition notebook will be a unique offering to notebook owners, who prefer to have not just a notebook but to make their style statement."
The 15-inch Asus-Lamborghini notebook, which is available in both yellow and black models, is based on the new Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology platform. The dual-core processing capabilities of the VX1 offer desktop level computing performance, including faster processing and high quality video/audio enjoyment while enabling high mobility and better productivity with smaller form factor and longer battery life.
The dual-core processing also provides enhanced responsiveness to enjoy audio and video playback and record, gaming, IM, and Web browsing simultaneously on the notebook. Moreover, it enhances performance on floating-point intensive applications such as gaming, digital music, digital photography, and video editing.
The notebook incorporates the Nvidia GeForce Go7400VX that delivers stunning, true-to-life visuals, incredibly smooth video playback, and exceptional graphics performance, from personal video recording and high definition TV, to enthusiast-level gaming.
The other specifications include Intel 945PM chipset, Intel 3945ABG WLAN, 160GB of HDD, DVD Super-Multi Double Layer ODD, 2GB DDRII-667 MHz RAM, and Windows XP Professional OS. The notebook also comes with a Bluetooth mouse along with a multifunction carry bag.
While the black model of the Asus-Lamborghini VX1 notebook comes for Rs 1,76,810 excluding taxes, the yellow model is priced at Rs 1,98,620 excluding taxes. Both models are available through Asus network of channel partners.
