Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, is in an induced coma in hospital after being assaulted twice late on Wednesday evening in Christchurch. Ryder, 28, is in intensive care after suffering a fractured skull, which Christchurch Police believes happened in the second of the two attacks.
The first took place about 12.30am outside the Aikman's Bar in a Christchurch suburb Merivale, where Ryder had been out with team-mates and friends following Wellington's loss to Canterbury. The second occurred minutes later at the entrance to the car park of a McDonald's across the road, where other Wellington players had gone to order food.
"Obviously the cricket community's very shocked at what's happened to Jesse. He's obviously in a serious condition," he said. "It's a sad day for us, a number of players around the country are in shock, our focus now is on Jesse and his well-being.David White, the New Zealand Cricket chief executive, expressed his own sorrow at events via a statement: "We are all shocked by what has occurred and extremely concerned for Jesse. New Zealand Cricket's thoughts are with him and his family."
New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor added: "Thinking of you mate [Jesse] Ryder." Ryder's manager, Aaron Klee, wrote on his Twitter page: "Thanks for the calls and msgs of support for Jesse. Just heading to [Christchurch] to see him."

Fact File of Jesse Ryder
Jesse Ryder's is a tragic story. While it's easy to judge a man with problems, he's had an especially tough childhood.
Jesse Ryder's parents split when he was a kid and his Dad abandoned him and left the country when he was just 14 years old.
"Dad bounced when I was 14; he just took off. He dropped me off at a mate's one day and said he'd see me in a week. He never came back."
Bouncing around friends' places and sleeping on their couches with little parental control, Jesse started partying.
Despite his checkered career, Jesse Ryder has been a phenomenal batsman. Who can forget his 201 and his 105 off 72 balls, both vs India?
Jesse Ryder has played 18 tests, scored 1269 runs @ 41. In 29 ODIs, he's scored 1100 runs @ 34.

For such a talented cricketer, its a shame that he never realised his potential, always had issues with alcohol and behavior.
Hope he recovers soon and gets back to play cricket.
If he could emulate Marlon Samuels on second coming, he could do justice to his potential!

His childhood to be blamed for his behavior, we can not imagine the pain of splitting parents. Hope you will come back stronger Ryder.

Jesse Ryder offered a 'thumbs up' gesture and interacted with his family and manager on the day a 20-year-old man was charged with assault and another man questioned in connection with an attack which left the New Zealand cricketer in an induced coma in Christchurch Hospital.
Ryder's manager, Aaron Klee, said the thumbs up had been delivered to a neurosurgeon at the hospital before his family interacted further. Ryder's level of sedation had been adjusted to allow him to interact with his family, Klee said, though he added that "it's awful, he's lying there with tubes everywhere".
"I was there this morning and they're working on the level of sedation of the coma to a level where they can talk to Jesse and make him aware of talking to him," Klee said. "We got a thumbs up from him this morning. Everyone was very pleased [to hear that].
"We then had some interaction with me and Jesse and Jesse's mum and Jesse's partner. We were able to talk to him and he looked at us."

Jesse Ryder is out of his induced coma and has begun talking again as he embarks upon the long and arduous road towards a full recovery from his assault in Christchurch on Wednesday night.

Ryder's manager Aaron Klee said the New Zealand batsman was also now breathing without the assistance of a ventilator, though he is still battling the effects of his coma and the drugs used to aid his fight against serious head and lung injuries

Good to hear that. He seems to be recovering very well. Have been following the articles on Herald and everything looks pretty stable now. 🙂
