Just wanted to know some opinion's of engineers and even others opinions who browse this site.Gonna take up engineering this year and I've got Electronics and Communication engineering(EC) in a college which I like but I'm gonna try to change it to Computer Science(CS) engineering in coming round. The reason is most EC guys end up in CS type of jobs itself and I like both EC and CS.Some say EC and others say CS.The plus point of EC is they can do EC jobs as well as CS jobs and can enter into the telecom and ISP sector too but CS is mainly limited to IT companies only.My interest is computers,it's hardware and all electronics things. What's your say guys?EC or CS?

EC is better since it has more options, but it is also the toughest...

I'm not getting E&TC but it's EC(communication in general). It includes telecommunication too I believe.Ty for the inputs guys.Hoping few more come in.

Considering you have interested in hardware and electronics, I would suggest you go for ECE. No point taking up a CS if you don't have the basic interest in it

I've interest in CS too agantuk did CS in class XI and XII did well in it and liked the programming too.

Bump, Any one else if you've done/doing engineering please put in your input.Would be very valuable for me 🙂.

I am not a big fan of our education system, because of which the IT companies randomly are willing to take non-IT folks into IT jobs as well. Well, leaving that aside - Dont want to sound cliched (Aamir from 3 Idiots), but select what you like - Did you like coding stuff or you took it as a subject (In other words will a lesser salary but happier job at IT will satisfy you or you want IT because of potential salary perks?) . The answer for that should help you select what you should choose.

I liked C coding and didn't like DBMS.It was a choice between electronics, computers or biology in my XI and XII and I took computers. The thing is I don't know which I like more, cuz I liked electronic things when I was young(I still do) but took CS to see how that'd be and liked that too. The C part atleast. There are instances where big IT companies have taken other field engineers but that is quite rare.I'm happy with a moderate salary of about 4 to 5 LPA which students from the coll I'm going to join get right now.You seem to be a CS/IT engineer or maybe BCA/MCA graduate. Is the IT job very boring and repetitive? If IT companies just took CS/IT engineers then there'd be a big shortage for jobs for other fields like mech, ece, eee, civil and all.So it's a good thing that they take them all 😛.

If you are going to enter a service based company like TCS, CTS, Wipro etc - Then its almost like a lottery, you never know what you are going to get. Testing, Support work & what not & being a fresher one does not get to choose & its a battle to prove you are better & then get better work. So, in that sense, it all depends on where you end up. ----------------------There are so many BSc Comp Sci, BCA graduates I know who were decent in studies (IT subjects like C etc) from Arts/Science Colleges but had to choose Admin/HR/BPO jobs because these companies preferred a BE Mechanical over them and they could not stay jobless for long. These companies don't value their degrees/knowledge through those courses & its the education system I blame which creates such a situation. And I did not get your point, IT companies take other folks mech, ece, eee, civil and hence there is a shortage? Please clarify? All I am saying is its not a fair world when a person doing Mechanical is chosen over a guy in BCA for an "IT" job. System is to blame. Not the individual or the company. And the industry is to blame where in all kind of support jobs are bundled as part of IT (Software programmer) jobs. End Rant.

typo, I meant if IT companies didn't take them then there would be shortage of jobs for them as not many core companies for them are present.

My interest is computers,it's hardware and all electronics things.

Go by your interest it matters the most. CS is more closer to your interest than ECE

Fine.. But should they be getting that job ahead of "specialist" graduates/degree holders? In an ideal system - No.

In my opinion, there could be a top up course , after which you can become eligible for that "different" industry.

===========================

I will elaborate my point.

If one can switch industries in last minute & there is no preference of doing any specialization for job. Then why have different subjects in XII & parts of college. Have same subjects for all up to say "15th" Std. And have last 1-2 years for specialization.

If no, then people from specialization should be chosen & people interested to switch their areas need to do top up courses.

---------------------------

I understand some subjects require more time for specialization & IT is considered one of the few where its not much needed. But the fact is, that our education system does not have many ideal IT courses, where fundamentals are strongly taught so that someone who has done an IT course should be able to enter a company and start doing well pretty soon from joining date. But, because its so bad, that many IT & Non-IT folks needs to be trained all over albeit as a crash course anyway in the companies that has led to this situation.

Take neither and end your dilemma 😛Afaik, even ECE does have coding. Why dont you begin by comparing the syllabus of both courses ? Preferably get the syllabus from your college's website.

What i understand after reading your all post.. You are in kinda infatuation with CS but you actually love ET. Now its easy to decide to whom to go with. 🙂

ET?Do you mean EC iCon.ty for all your inputs.Guess more say EC.x720 I saw the courses and both seem good for me(I did much research before posting here bud) cuz CS is like most of C and other advanced languages like java and j2ee, DBMS, some comp architecture, unix system programming and stuff whereas EC had some networks, signals, circuit design, micro controllers, micro processors and all.
