Bangalore Airtel 4G Speedtest & Review

I had a trial of the Airtel 4G Wireless Indoor device but found the range of the signal somewhat limited and decided not to place an order just yet. The technician who visited tried to connect the Airtel wireless device to my existing D-Link router (which I use for BSNL) but without much luck. My question is: can the WiFi range or the Airtel 4G device be extended using the D-Link as attempted or using a WiFi Extender such as the Netgear Universal Range Extender? Thank you.SB *

Some more speed tests, getting speeds of around 20 Mbps in most servers:

Awesome results, thank you so much!

Could you also take your time to get only the latencies for the below IP's? No need of trace-routes 🙂

111.118.213.175
109.73.166.3
107.6.120.9
83.170.69.14
80.83.122.110

I know it's too much to ask for, I was just wondering what are the ping times to around the world, not just to local servers 🙂

Here are the results pal:

111.118.213.175 - 51 ms
109.73.166.3 - 80 ms
107.6.120.9 - 58 ms
83.170.69.14 - 171 ms
80.83.122.110 - 190 ms

Yes, WiFi range can definitely be extended using Wifi Extenders.
D-Link can also be used to extend range provided it has a RJ-45 WAN port(not RJ11 as in ADSL Router) & also we need to connect a RJ45 cable from the Airtel CPE to Dlink to achieve this

Thanks!
They're just random IP's of the hosting providers across the world. In particular order :

HostGator India (Hyderabad)
HostDime India (Delhi I think)
Voxel Singapore
UK2 (UK)
DUS (Germany)

Nice pings you've got, maybe it's low as there aren't many 4G subscribers yet, but I guess that might also be a sign of a properly maintained network too 🙂 Do keep this thread updated with your review.

hey madhusudhan7 could you ping some gaming servers of MW3,etc based outside India and in the west. Also do this ping test after your 9 GB usage when speeds drop to 128 kbps and post too.Lets see if 4G pings remain same even after the speed drop.

I shall keep it as updated as i can pal. From what i know this is how the latency of a 4G network is... it's the technology which is making this possible, yes of course it may increase in future because of congestion etc but 4G will always be way better than 3G in pings & speeds alike.

Please provide me with the ip address or host name for these tests
Will post the tests as soon as my speed drops to 128 Kbps

Quite high for 4G I think.under 150ms was what I expected for all.Was this done before the 9 GB limit or after? Moreover this was only for 4 kb data and while gaming much more would be needed to be sent and received so pretty bad result in my opinion.

I still haven't exhausted the 9gb limit, the speed seems to have reduced today - speeds tests were under 10 Mbps constantly & coincidentally it's raining today, not heavy though - mostly drizzling. Not sure if rains or bad weather are to be blamedBut this is still much better compared to my old BSNL connection which would have latencies of 200+ or even 300+ at most times for Indian speedtest.net servers

I see that you refer yourself as a medium to heavy user. And 9 GB seems to be less for a heavy or even medium home user, especially if post FUP speed is going to be 128 kbps.

My usage is seasonal pal, i don't download movies/music or any other media content anymore. I only browse or use bandwidth for Office VPN & occasional software downloads which can be in GB's at times - Eg. Consumer & Release preview of Windows 8, MS Office 2013 etc
But when i need the bandwidth - i'll need a lot of it. My base internet connection has always been BSNL with UL1350 - 4Mbps till 30gb then 512Kbps plan. I've planned to change to Tikona 4Mbps UL plan in a week or so because of issues with BSNL - But these are only backup connections, i simply can't afford to have a downtime mostly because of office work

My sister uses up 9GB in one week. And she's barely on pc 4~5 hrs max in one week (not counting time spent on FB)

9gb can be easily utilized under 30-60 mins at such high speeds pal. Airtel should have lowered the speed to 512Kbps - 1Mbps instead of 128Kbps after FUP, 128Kbps is a bit too harsh after being on a 30-35 Mbps connection

My bsnl pings are pretty good if i use their own dns and pings are worst when i use open/google what ever it is...
When there is a low speed I will just switch to dns advantage pings are very bad though.. I keep changing it.
