Airtel has completely gone crazy. Wants a share in revenue from web services. #netneutrality

Today, Google, Yahoo! and others are enjoying at the cost of network operator. We are the ones investing in setting up data pipes and they make the money. There is interconnection for voice then why not for data.

Network is capital intensive, we have to pay for spectrum and voice revenue is coming down. At the same time, companies like Google, which have not invested more than a few billion dollars, are enjoying valuations that are ten times that of a traditional telecom player. It’s an unfair game.

They are completely bypassing the telecom operator. There should be a fair revenue share.

Google, Facebook should share revenue with us: Airtel

So, they already overcharge us for each MB of data transferred through their network. Now they want web services to pay them for the same. The hilarity of the situation is unbelievable.

Airtel has just made network neutrality relevant for every internet user in the country...

We are the ones who pay for the data, isn't that enough already?If Google, Yahoo, etc.. blocks them for a couple of weeks, they are gonna get back in their minds I guess.

I dont see that happening, but cant say, one thing that will happen if all popular sites start charging is that a huge fragmentation will occur, wherein it will be 90s where each person will have his own random email-id & we will start getting invites to join for all random social networking, email & other sites.I guess most people will just move over to other free services. Especially as long as they are available.

ISPs in America are trying to do something similar with Netflix. Google is also a target because of YouTube. But they are sensible enough not to ask for revenue sharing for services like Facebook and other Google properties. Airtel here sounds like a jealous SOB. Their main complaint is that online companies have valuations out of this world while they are struggling to cope up with the growing traffic. This is the same excuse MPAA and RIAA makes. You do not want to innovate? It is your fault completely. Do not blame others for your failure.Airtel is clearly making money on every MB of data transfer conducted by their customers. Whether it is on Edge, 3G or broadband. Online services on the other hand have to be extremely lucky to make money especially when they are offering their services for free. Airtel is crying because their business model is not as hip and happening as that of Google and Facebook. It's like a postman crying that he does not get paid a commission on checks that he delivers to your house from businesses you conduct.

This is ridiculous. Videos are understandable, but targetting sites with primarily text and to an extent visual content is stupid. If they really want a share of revenue, they should attack sites like TOI and rediff which are homes for soft p0rn fanatics. Next they will ask eBay, Amazon etc. to share a percent of their revenue for enabling them to do their business online

Data is data, irrespective of text, images and video. How should it matter to the likes of Airtel? If they are jealous of Googles and Facebooks, they are sick. Uski aukaath hi kya hai? Kahaan raja bhoj, kahaan gangu theli?

They can't do even a decent job of mobile telephony and broadband, but want to comment on Googles and Facebooks!

Thank god airtel is not running railways in this country.Otherwise they would have demanded a cut from from every passenger travelling daily on the job.Saying that gainful employment and earning would not have been possible without them.
