Nokia

Nokia will soon be announcing its new range of Pureview and Lumia series of handsets but that's not all Nokia is working on at the moment. The Finnish handset giant is working on the implementation of the Superhydrophobic technology that is known to repel water with its handsets.
With the use of this technology, Nokia aims at making the future handsets including Lumia and Pureview smartphones waterproof. While making devices waterproof will certainly be a big advantage as it will allow users to use mobiles even when it's raining hard but along with that the adoption of this technology will surely enhance the life of the devices.
Conor Pierce, vice president of Nokia Western Europe, while explaining it to the Somobile of UK, said, "Superhydrophobic technology makes water bounce, it stops it, rolls it off the device and leaves it water impregnant. That's the magic, that's what we're going to bring to the party."

Although work is underway, Nokia is still not ready to comment on when this waterproofing technology will be implemented in its mobile phones. Although many manufacturers like Motorola have tried and have successfully managed to create water resistant devices but creating something that is waterproof would be a giant leap ahead.

lol.

Nokia made mention of a broader Lumia phone range coming as part of its major strategy shakeup, but it wasn't clear just where the Windows Phone line was heading. During a call discussing the nitty-gritty of the strategy shift, though, the company made clear that it was swinging towards devices cheaper than the Lumia 610 -- much cheaper. Plans had already been underway to drop the price lower, but Microsoft had given "specific support" to get to lower prices than Nokia "had a sight to." Executives dropped hints that "important catalyst dates" in Microsoft's Windows Phone timetable were

Nokia: Microsoft is giving us "specific support" to compete with Android at even lower prices -- Engadget :aglerks:

Update: Nokia got in touch with us and it turns out the interview was wrongly interpreted. When asked what the company's backup plan was, Nokia's chairman hasn't explicitly stated that Android is in it. Here's the exact quote: "[...] like any responsible board, we must be prepared for alternatives, but that is not our focus today [...]".

you have been trolled. i was surprised to see the first post of the thread because he never said android was their backup plan. gsmarena did bad journalism and reported a wish as a fact. it was a linkbait and you fell for it. a lot of us want nokia to develop android based devices. but nokia has not said anything about it.

their backup plan could be anything. the strong is selling their smartphone division to microsoft and focus on budget and mid range of the market. microsoft probably would not be interested in this segment of the market where profits are low.

nokia and microsoft are too involved today. microsoft has been paying nokia around 250 million dollars every quarter for their support on windows phone. nokia maps is being deeply integrated with microsoft bing maps. microsoft and nokia have a patent agreement which allows a single entity to license them to third party companies.

nokia cannot get rid of microsoft easily. they would have to get out of all these deals which has become a huge liability for them and for anyone who might be interested in acquiring nokia. it is very unlikely that nokia would be able to sell android devices in the near future even if their board fires elop and drop windows phone from their portfolio.

Well i read that update before posting, it is quite likely that Nokia will never accept that in first hand till last. But logically speaking they have very few alternatives. If WP is a failure they have to run somewhere and Android is the only alternative. Symbian anna, belle, meego etc etc are way too dangerous to even think of revival. And it is very likely that WP will fail yet again, the UI looks so bore even on an comp screen...It can't take on IOS and Android for sure.

Sigh. You'd think if *any* device manufacturer was to adopt Android, a Linux-based OS, it would be Nokia. Damn Elop. It looks like he's been positioning Nokia for a takeover from day-1. Looking at his history, this seems to be his speciality.

Nokia "could" become another Palm, with Apple or Microsoft sitting on shltload of patents. But Windows could save nokia WM is an excellent multi-tasking platform.( better than Ios for sure and rivals android but handles memory bettter than android)More over consumers expect and need their phones to integrate with their desktop computers in a simple and easy way. Windows Mobile wins in this scenario, hands down. It is designed from the ground up to integrate with both Exchange Servers in the corporate world, and with Outlook environment. We people on this forum are all have more than basic knowlegde about OS's and its enviroments but people on the street will pick up a device that is easy to use and reliable. ( and ofcourse marketed with a little flare) I think Windows Mobile still has a lot to offer and nokia still has a chance with windows 8. Before everybody attacks me for siding with microsoft and windows 8 ........ hold your horses and go grab a beer. Happy friday .

lol. ubuntu on mobile devices as a native platform is not really going to work. it's not like there are shortage of mobile platforms available to Nokia to pick from. there are tons out there. the problem is that they discarded meego to focus on windows phone.

because i do not see ubuntu based mobile OS running on budget segment devices which is essential for any company to survive in the mobile market? you need a platform that can run on devices priced at 10K to 40K.

I think Nokia has made it mind - Smartphone with WP, and Feature Phones (Non-Smartphone) with Symbian S40. Belle is also there, but may not last longer.
