right. app developer can set their own subscriptions. useful for newspapers and magazines.

but wouldnt they (developers) prefer to have their own in app billing. this was they'll have to give some portion to google.

Apple pretty much block third party payments through the apps offered through their own app store.

google i do not think has a similar policy. they are just offering a method to offer subscriptions. i assume that services that charge independently are already able to do so. like hulu plus and Spotify.

this functionality i guess helps those consumers who do not have a credit card to pay for apps but use carrier billing. overall, it simplifies the payments for both developer and end user. developers of course have alternatives already available.
