Not only will developer attendees get access to the BlackBerry 10 Developer Tools, but they’ll also be receiving a limited edition developer prototype device – the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha™.* This is not a BlackBerry 10 smartphone – it is a prototype running a modified version of the PlayBook OS which will help developers design their apps for the BlackBerry 10 smartphone form factor. *Just to be 100% clear – it’s not the final hardware or OS for BlackBerry 10 – it’s a device to help developers get started with designing for what’s coming. *BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha is only for developers – not end users – and is only available to developer attendees at BlackBerry 10 Jam.Join us at BlackBerry 10 Jam for hands-on time with BlackBerry 10 tools and… «Inside BlackBerry - The Official BlackBerry Blog

BlackBerryOS.com - BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Sells For $1000 On eBay - More Starting To Show Up

While the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices are great tools for developers as well as a nice collectors item, could you see yourself paying $1000 for the device? That's exactly what an eBay user paid as a "Buy It Now" price. Also, another Dev Alpha sold for $900 as well.

Buyer beware, these devices may have the "end of life" built into the OS. If you remember, we saw the "end of life" plague previous OS builds last October. So unless these buyers are just extreme BB device collectors, they are going to most likely have a very expensive paper weight. I doubt they understand that.

We most likely will see more Dev Alpha devices pop up on eBay in the coming weeks leading up to the BlackBerry 10 launch on Jan 30th. Devs that aren't going to be trading in their Dev Alpha device's for a Limited Edition BlackBerry 10 device, will most likely be in a hurry to sell.

Even though the devices are clearly marked that they are "property of RIM" and "not for resale," I doubt RIM would do anything about these devices being sold. Those are just warnings to cover their own ass if someone decides they want to sue RIM because they were a sucker and paid a grand for the device. But I suppose if RIM wanted to get all legal on someone for selling the device, they could.

How much would you pay for a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha?

RIM starts sending out Limited Edition Trade-up forms to all qualified app vendors. These 12,000 limited BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be specifically made for developers who has enrolled swapping program in any of BlackBerry Jam Sessions. BlackBerry 10 Dev LE will probably hold same specs of consumer L-Series model but with different casing. According to Alec Saunders, VP Developer Relations at RIM, this priceless gift will have ”Thank You for being part of Blackberry 10 Launch” engraved on its panel.

The e-mail states delivery period of BlackBerry 10 Dev LE devices that is after the launch of BlackBerry 10 (Jan 30th).
