Firstly, the m600i does not have EDGE - net would be too slow.
If you're going to be somewhere around your home PC, you can instead get any Nokia phone with Symbian, & install a gateway application, to let you access the net thru your PC's broadband (using bluetooth to connect to PC). The Nokia 7710 would be awesome if you can find it.

UIQ3 simply is a variant of symbian - focussed towards business use. Note that you lose a very slight bit of compatibility with the vast library of symbian apps if you're on a UIQ-based phone....
And what kind of software is available? Literally the entire range of software available for the PC!
I'm very happy with my phone, its convenient & easy to use, plus powerful - using it as a mobile PC, & then sync it with my PC whenever i get home.

Most symbian software is usually commercial (just like any other OS...) - and there's a very deep rooted eco-system around getting these for 'free' (with apps & cracks & keygens, etc....). FTPs, IRC channels, torrents, underground mobile warez sites..... (probably you could even have someone setup a temporary ftp server to get the files over the net 😉 )

I have a Nokia 3230. Most of the SW on the dvds are compatible with any symbian phone. Tested on Nokia 7710, 6681, Sony-Ericsson P900 (the SE phone is a UIQ so yes it works).

Here's a review of 7710:

(the review is old, so its price would have definitely fallen a lot - the last i heard of it was in June 2006 when it cost 17k....)

ok, I read a little on the 7100 - don't like it!It really is a bummer that the m600i does not have EDGE. When is 3G coming to India?btw how much does an average person's bill go up by gprs/edge use in a month?

I access net thru Airtel data card that belongs to my employer. It costs ~1k per month, speeds that i get are ~200 kbps on EDGE. Good enough for running SSH over VPN.For checking Gmail and calendar /todo (basically PIM tools) I use my cell (Nokia 6020) throughout the day. Rate is 5 Rs per MB. I end up spending ~ 60 Rs every month + 49 Rs rental.

The EDGE thing is really bothering me about the m600i... Why do cellphone companies import 3G phones here???

So I am leaning towards the Nokia E50. It's 5000 bucks cheaper, but alas no touchscreen. I would love to get the E60 but it seems wasteful to spend Rs. 7,000 more just to get WiFi (which seems to be the only differing feature between the two models).

Does anyone here have either phone?

One of my collegues has E62.I think the biggest dvantage of E6x phones is the big screen + faster CPU. And Nokia web browser make this phone easy to use for surfing sites while you are travelling. Have you tried both phones at some shop? That should give you some idea about this advantage.

u hardly can check features at those shops...they just show u the box and give u a dummy to see how heavy it is...no working models available... 🙁

Yeah, I wish there was, say, a chain of shops that had working models you could try out. But then again, in a country where most people buy phones on the basis of looks and "camera hai ki nahin" there really is no incentive....

I'm not even looking at the E61 or E62 as I don't need a e-mail phone as much, and more importantly they are out of my price range. I am looking at the E50 because it seems like it's a decent basic smartphone for a fairly good price. The only downsides I see are that the camera is nothing great (video downright sucks) which is okay since I don't really like cameraphones, and that the phone itself is nothing great to look at.

umm try going to a Sony authorized showroom. exclusive dealers are more likely to have models available for trying.

thats fine, but between a 7100 & a Nokia 7710 - loads off differences.... 😛

heh - typo there 🙂So.... I'm basically looking at getting the Nokia E50, especially considering that it is almost 5K cheaper than the m600i. No touchscreen, but the organizer features look pretty good (I like having the standby/main screen showing me a list of appointments/to-do/unread messages for the day). And that green light which blinks to show you have some unread messages / missed calls would be ideal for a person like me, who leaves his cellphone lying around all over the place..... and it's got EDGE which the m600i doesn't.So does anyone here have the phone? What do you think about it?@prathapml: The software you mentioned earlier - would it work on the e50?

spelling 😱 About the symbian software, yup, the E50 is compatible with 90% of recent apps, & atleast 50% of ancient apps that have been around since 1998.
