I had tried Android 2.2 through Android Emulator. It was very slow. Is it fast now?.
Not really. It takes 3mins to load up and its a bit sluggish.
Did you follow Softpedia tutorial to move Unity panel to bottom?
There is a Unityrotate plugin thats available through ppa. One can edit it through CCSM.

If it's emulation speed you are after and you don't mind doing some extra work to get it set-up, you can try the Android-x86 project in a virtualbox. I haven't used it yet though.

I've tried that too. Both are very slow.
