According to a local TV news report Airtel will jump straight from 2G to 4G for Punjab circle.Airtel was not alloted 3G spectrum for Punjab circle, hence Punjab will be one of the few circles to straightaway experience 4G as Airtel has already been alloted the 4G spectrum for Punjab.

Its BWA spectrum Airtel got in Punjab [Data only]. As per my knowledge you can't call from it.

yes Sai, its true. auction was done for BWA and it was for data only and not Voice. its simple dish type antenna would installed at roof top and would face the Booster from operator tower.

Oh ! So a Dish will have to be installed for 4G ?Is the actual 4G modem( Not the 21 Mbps 3.5+G modem) also USB type or something else ?4G does not include voice ?Another thing the Airtel Upper north manager said was that speed of Airtel 4G will be in GBs !

4G has different types with different data speeds. Some of the systems use USB type modem. Here is more details: 4G - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What is the use of better speed if the FUP remains at the stupidly low current limits?
5GB/Month @ 50/100 Mbps makes no sense.

current tested speeds on 4G network has been 100mbps. while on move it would cater only 36 mbps because of latency issue with respect to distance bet tower and device. so 4G access can be many types---- 1. Fixed antenna with troughput of 100 mbps, 2. dongles but then speeds would differ as per latency, 3. through handsets with voice.let us not waste our time on such topic as actual performance and Hefty prices would be far from reallty. very SAD but this is the reality in india

Any SPECIFIC date of launch

He did not mention the exact date but the way he was excited it could be sooner than later.

We might see more in tommorow's newspapers from Punjab as the press conference took place in Chandigarh.

Another thing mentioned in the report was that Airtel has 4G spectrum for Punjab,Maharashtra,Karnataka and Kolkata,so may be others will get 4G from other service providers except Airtel.

You had heard a absolutely correct news. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Infotel had won the licence of BWA and would be providing services by Next year. Both the companies had started establishing their infra .

You are talking about Wi-Max buddy. In WiMax, small Dish is required not in case of BWA.

No Dish required in case of 4G (BWA/ LTE)

Yes, 4G is only data and VOIP will be used for Voice calls.

From the above discussion it seems that 4G spectrum allocation is not meant for mobile phones and is only for laptops/desktops.

So far as I can think ,for a a mobile phone even 7.2 Mbps would be very fast enough.I may be wrong but I cant think of what difference 7.2 Mbps vs 21 Mbps will make on a mobile phone ?

Thanks for informing about the 4G thread.
I did not know it existed.
