Nokia India just announced their Lumia series of smartphones which come with the brand new Microsoft Windows 7.5 operating system (OS). This partnership between the two giants is something that everyone is talking about. Nokia, as we all know, are known for the build quality of their phones, i.e. the hardware; on the other hand Microsoft are the makers of the most popular OS in the world, i.e. Windows. And when two such successful brands collaborate, magic is bound to happen.Nokia has come out with two phones in their Lumia series, the Nokia Lumia 710 and the Nokia Lumia 800. Both phones come with the Windows 7.5 OS, which is definitely the talking point about these smartphones. A revamped interface was one major thing which the consumers were looking for, from Nokia. And now with the familiarity of Windows and the power of Nokia, the Lumia series might just change the way we perceive smartphones. The Nokia Lumia 800 is the superior one among the crop and is aimed at the high end user out there. With a 1.4 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, an 8 MP camera, a 3.7 inch Gorilla-Glass ClearBlack display, makes for a power-packed gadget which will attract even the biggest mobile geek to consider giving it a shot. A seamless body design with no external buttons on the display gives you the largest workspace and a sleek design which is really good to look at. The Nokia Lumia 710 on the other hand is pretty similar to the Lumia 800 but it has some differences. It has a relatively less powerful 5 MP camera. The storage capacity is also significantly lower with 8 GB on the Lumia 710 as compared to the 16 GB of the Lumia 800. The other notable difference is the battery size of the two smartphones. But these differences mean that the Lumia 710 could very well be the most affordable Windows Phone smartphone in the market.Whether these smartphones will really click with the consumers will also depend on the pricing Nokia announces. But one thing is for sure, by the looks of it, Nokia has taken a solid step in the right direction in the smartphone market.

701-19k and 800-29k......At these prices and competition from android along with the refurbished iphone4 at 22.5k, it will have Few takers....personally, i was looking forward to it, but the prices are too steep, will have to skip them!
 
Why prices are higher by Nokia can't say. WP7 mobile by Samsung with similar specs is costs less.

because of the build quality, nokia is top notch
 
Well to capture the already crowded smatphone market (ios, belle, android, blackberry) the price of these Nokia mango devices should be very aggressive.

Microsoft has been in the mobile os market for a long time now and till now it has not been able to capture substential market penetration; w.r.t. the competitor mobile operating systems mango still has to cover a long distance.

Though the mango operating system now looks quite fancy with the metro user interface coupled with around 500 improvents/enhancements/updates over the Nodo )previous operating system) but feature wise it still has to struggle with the other major mobile operating systems.

To re-iterate; I think agressive pricing for now and very frequent feature addition and enhancements by deeply considering the user requirments are the key for Mango's success.

I was going through Mango's feature list and able to gather some pros and cons for this current os, some features might not make sense for some probable users and some features might make some sense 🙂

pros:
1. incorporated multi-tasking
2. email and exchange
3. social networks integration
4. voice dictation
5. group interaction (communicate with co-workers, friends and family in one go)
6. skydrive (sync every type of document between phone and the cloud)
7. battery saver feature

cons:
1. dual core processors are not supported
2. no true multi-tasking (apps are suspended/paused)
3. tasks don't show up on the tile screen / loock screen
4. tasks cannot be syncronysed with third party calendars
5. custon ringtones are not easy to apply
6. requires zune to sync with the pc
7. no flash support (may not be a con, flash for mobile is dead anyway)
8. no book store
9. no wireless cloud backup

Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia’s French division manager let slip a revealing piece of news to the Parisian daily Les Echos, saying the company was prepping a Windows-powered tablet for next summer. "In June 2012, we will have a tablet that runs on Windows 8,"




The tablet could build on the Nokia Lumia 800, which features one-touch social network access, grouping of contacts, integrated communication threads and Internet Explorer 9. It features a 3.7 inch AMOLED ClearBlack curved display and a 1.4 GHz processor with hardware acceleration and a graphics processor. The Lumia 800 also contains an instant-share camera experience based on Carl Zeiss optics, HD video playback, 16GB of internal user memory and 25GB of free SkyDrive storage for storing images and music. The estimated retail price for the Nokia Lumia 800 will be approximately $566, though no U.S. release date was specified.

I am getting the feeling that Windows phones are next Apple phones. Lots of restrictions comes for free with their features. Otherwise why external memory card support not available. Also why Zune is needed to sync contents with PC...
 
windows phone is a year old platform and these restrictions are well known. microsoft is following the Apple's route of managing their platform unlike the route offered by Symbian and Android. another well known fact. it's just that WP devices are not much popular here in India so fewer people know about the limitations.
 
why external memory card support not available.


It is due to the way WP7 works. It doesn't treat the external card as a separate entity, instead it merges it with its main onboard memory. Problems - everytime one inserts or removes a card, the phone has to be hard reset. A pain from the user's point of view. Second, there have been numerous compatibility issues with the class of SD card, as to be treated on par with onboard memory, it needs to meet certain speed criteria for optimal OS performance.

Another reason why this doesn't make much sense is because WP7 isn't designed to read from SD cards as is. So even if you copy media or docs or anything else to the card, it will just not be able to read from it. Makes the whole point of having an extendable memory redundant.

Also why Zune is needed to sync contents with PC...
Standardisation is the word here. Don't put stuff which isn't compatible. Will prevent failures.
