I have an old system and today I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on it. Everything works fine except the TV Tuner card. I have a UMAX USB TV Tuner card. I did get an installation cd with it, but I believe it is only meant for Windows.Any idea on how I can run it? I am a n00b when it comes to Linux.

Umm.. I dont have a solution.. but seems like common question on internet.

UMAX USB TV linux - Google Search (dont know if there is solution)

Did u try usb_modeswitch?

Does output of lsusb show it?

lusb does show it. But usb_modeswitch does not work for me. I have tried Tvtime but that does not help either. Will go back to Win XP.

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it.

Don't know how much you will succeed, especially with an old TV Tuner card. I never was able to find drivers even for Windows 7 for my TV Tuner card. 🙁

Yes if u have old tv tuner card, its most likely NON-standard card, which means unless its a popular card, u will not find drivers for it.Since u cudnt find it on google, I doubt it will be possible.

Did you try Myth TV?. You should have asked the question in Ubuntuforums.

I tried MythTv as well. My card is not old. It has drivers for Win 7. But having searched on ubuntu forums I have given up on it. Even if it somehow works, it will require putting a number of commands in the Terminal - something I am not very comfortable with. Best option for me is to go back to Windows.

most probably your card has saa7134 chip on it and your ubuntu already has drivers of it.Install vlc on your ubuntu and then Following command will play the video in VLC media playervlc -vvv v4l2:///dev/video0 --v4l2-tuner-frequency=846500 --v4l2-width=720 --v4l2-height=576 --sout '#duplicate{dst="transcode{deinterlace,deinterlace-mode=yadif}:display",dst="transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=256,scale=0.5,deinterlace,deinterlace-mode=yadif}:standard{mux=ts,access=http,dst=0.0.0.0:7171}"' &Just set the frequency of the channel you want to see.If the above does not work for you, follow this procedureOpen your terminal and type lspci and paste the output of that command hereDo the same for command lsusb

Just set the frequency of the channel you want to see.

Thanks for the reply. Where do I put this command? Somewhere within the vlc program or in terminal. I tried putting this in the Network url bar of vlc and in terminal but can't paste the url there. Looks like 'Paste' option does not work there.

Btw, with TV Tuner card connected, I get the following outputs.

At this time, both the TV Tuner card and a Reliance datacard were plugged into the usb slots.

See the last Bus 002 Device 009: ID 1f71:3306 in your lsusb . 1f71 is the vendor id and 3306 is the product id of your device.

unfortunately you card is based on em28xx chipset .This family is currently not supported in ubuntu 🙁

If you are an enthusiast ,you can compile the driver for yourself

Thanks for all your help. Unfortunately I am a n00b when it comes to Linux. The easier way would be to switch back to Windows. Once again, thanks for the help. Really appreciate it.
