hi, i have dataone unlimited 256 kbps connection. i cannot locate the dmz option in my routers configuration page. my router model is smartAx MT882 (the default one provided by bsnl). I need this option to be enbled. or give me an alternative to forward 1000 ports to the specified LAN ip address. By default this modem supports only 20 ports 🙁 to be opened(through the virtual server setting). please someone help. i have been trying this for months.

^ I searched the net with Dmz router smartax keywords and
understand that smartax MT882 has no provision for Dmz .
so you may have to get a new router having the Dmz provision .
or you have to work in the bridged mode .

fianlly phew.. :blink: thanks seshu for replying. i can't go for another modem (this modem already costed me 1800). why does everyone just simply say "try bridged mode". i really can't understand this. and it also says that u have to contact your isp for changing to "bridged mode". Can anyone plzz help me what this bridged mode is and how to change to that mode. Or atleast tell me the procedure to make this "age of conquerors" work in multiplayer online. Don't tell me the same procedure as it is in "portforward.com". the information in that page regarding this game doesnot help me. All my friends, nearly 8 of them are having this same problem. if anyone can help me, it will greatly help me(and my 8 friends) in getting a lower grade in this semester

Anyway my last chance is to write a letter to chip or digit magazine. i hope that they will answer my question. BTW i didn't try the ppoe software. i read some of the readme files and i will try it later as a last resort. thanks for you help seshu. i will update about this problem later.

There are two steps in using your modem in bridge mode:
1. Setting up XP to dial your service provider
-------------------------------------------------
Assuming you are using Windows XP follow the steps as shown here(those given in "Configuring Windows XP for PPPoE Dynamic DSL" section):

but note that:
- in step 8, you can put any name, e.g. BSNL DataOne
- in step 9, user you BSNL username and password.
If you are not using XP, ask someone how accomplish the above for your version of Windows.
2. Configure your MT882 modem to be used in bridge mode
---------------------------------------------------------------
To do so, open your modem configuration page in a web browser. I think you have to go to the URL http://192.168.1.1 (with your modem ON and connected to your computer). If you cannot go to this web page, list the output of "ipconfig" command in the command prompt.
Once in the configuration page, go to the WAN Settings, and in the ConnectionType, choose "Pure Bridge". Once this is done, go to Tools->System Setting and restart the modem by clicking on "save and restart".
After the previous two steps, you should be able to connect by clicking on the newly created BSNL connection (Step 1). You can create a short cut to this connection for all users for convenience.

hi bsnluser, finally. thanks for replying. i knew that someone would be coming up with a better explanation (seshu also did a good job, but i'm being lazy didn't trust in him. sorry seshu). These are my doubts. (i'm using windows xp) i want to know what are the advantages of using the modem in "bridged mode". Does it eliminate the need for port forwarding? > or i still have to forward ports for individual applications (or playing online games). the smartAx 882 doesnot support forwarding more than 20 ports ( that's the maximum entry that i can make in the virtual server page in router config) P.S : i have successfully hosted some of the games. all the games that i hosted needed only 1 port to be opened. So for me games that require only one port (or less than 20 ports ) to be opened works fine. But for games that require 100 ports, i can enter only the first 20 ports and the game doesnot work(looks like it needs all the 100 ports). You guys are really great waiting for your reply.

Well, in bridge mode, you computer which is connected to the modem, practicallly gets the public IP address. The modem works like a bridge and the outside IP network practically see only your computer through the bridge. So the public IP address, the IP given to your modem by BSNL upon connection, essentially becomes your computer's IP address. Hence, you don't need any port forwarding at all in this case.
Also, if you type "ipconfig" in DOS command terminal, you will see that your public IP is listed as ppp connection.
So the advantage is you don't need any port forwarding in this case and you can connect or disconnect from your BNSL connection icon.
The disadvantages are:
1. I guess your modem's firewall needs to be off. I am not sure about this. But try with your modem's firewall off and then with it on and see if you see any difference.
2. If your modem's firewall is off, then you need to have your own firewall on your computer, e.g. Zone Alarm. However, having such a firewall is strongly recommended in any case.
3. I guess in this mode you can only connect one computer with the modem. If I am wrong, others can correct me.

the modem's firewall is turned on. it doesn't make any difference if i either turn it on or off. i can host and play any game with the firewall turned on.
BTW i'm using Windows default firewall. i hate installing security applications (all of them are resource hungry). [i have not installed any anti-virus application or any adware removing application]. It's been nearly 8 months and my pc is not infected by any virus or adwares. As long as i stay away from crack, keygenerator and other illegal sites, i think my pc will be fine 😉 .
P.S: for testing ports i use "Azureus NAT/Firewall test" [tools-----> NAT/Firewall test].
One more thing, my friends really enjoyed playing AOC online. Serious Sam second encounter [co-operative missions] was also great. we are going to try NFS 6 today 🙂. [some of my friends only have the 845 onboard graphics card, so we are sticking with only directx 8 games 😉]

Thanks to Seshu and BSNLuser, I am setting up a voip phone adaptor/router behind BSNL modem/router HT882. Bridge mode stuff was very useful for me. btw regarding the PORT FORWARDING, I think a range of ports can be forwarded in IP FILTER, (correct me if I'm wrong). This is very well illustrated in the USER manual, page 45. I found this manual on www.Huawei.com, n uploaded on link-removed, I don't know if u guys have it, sorry if its redundant.
