Well I am so exicted that my colony is getting wired up by airtel broadband....it's only a matter of days...maybe weeks or maybe a month that airtel broadband comes into my areaWell I have a queryI want to get airtel BB but not airtel phoneIs is neccesary to take a phone connection along with airtel DSL conn. Also I found telephone charges quite high.. I mean like with Rs 250 pm rental u only get 50 calls free.....MTNL gives 60 whereas Tata Indicom FWT gives arounfd 150 + in postpaid and Rs 225 in Rs 300 recharge coupon prepiadAlso further calls are also charged at higher rates like Re 1 and Rs 1.20 whereas MTNL gives at 0.80 and 1.20 and TATA at 0.90So actually i am not really interested in Airtel Phone bcoz of high rates and bocz i dont wanna change my landline numberSo Can I Get only Airtel BB?Also i want to aks Those who are having airtel bb... how much is average downtime and do u get expected speeds at all times????

Yeah, you have to get the phone connection.... that part really s*cks... but given the quality of other ISPs it's probably worth it to spend that extra bit on the phone....

4 months, and never have I got downtime.... at most something screwed up and it wouldn't connect, but a quick reinstall of the (USB) modem solved that....

I think their customer service isn't that great.... it seems they just outsource it to people who don't even know their packages etc...... though on the brighter side, you will get through very quickly, and won't be put on hold very much.......

As I said in another thread (Link)I am a little disappointed by a decrease in speed..... so just watch out for contention ratios (i.e. the ratio given next to each plan) which in short tells you how many people might be sharing your line. (Yes, contrary to what they say on their site, DSL is also shared between people and you are not getting a "dedicated lne"). So, download whatever you want in the first couple of months!!! :)

customer support is great in the way that if i have to call the main center, the local guys gets bashed verbally. the local representative actually pleaded with me not to call the main center and contact him directly. :)

The connections is really good, No down time since i got the connections i.e around 4 months. The phone connections is also really good. and the customer service is great. The only problem is you can't use the usb modem they give you on linux or mac , even for that problem you can get a router.

Yes, its as the others are saying but a few adds: - IRC is blocked - Connection keeps dropping unexpectedlyBut yes, its good considering its price and no download limits. Also, god knows where the other guys got their info about "phone compulsory". Back here you can take a DSL line alone (no phone) and monthly rentals starts from Rs.249Because of that connection drop problem, go for the router. The router will take care of dialing and connectiong you, and @$$ign a local IP to your network card. If you get the USB modem, god only save you with re-dialing every 30-40 minutes. That re-dialing crap will majorly annoy you when you have put something for download and walk away, and find out in the morning that the connection dropped within 5 mins of you going to sleep, and because you weren't there to redial, the download could not progress. But beware of the router if you are going to host your own website or FTP, etc.The router stands like a stone-wall (sorry, firewall ) and won't allow incoming internet requests to your server. All else (like browsing, download, P2P) works fine.

I replaced the Airtel Yozan router with a Netgear 824M combined adsl modem/wireless router that I picked up for cheap in the U.S.. I have the unlimited 128 connection and it works flawlessly (so far considering how things have a habit of going downhill rapidly in India). No problem with the routing function; I am feeding three computers wirelessly and one through wires. Speeds do come down a bit during daytime but have rarely dropped below 100 kbps. Strangely, my connection is over PPoE (which is what the modem detected) while the Yozan router that I had earlier was PPoA?!Regarding Yozan, they must have picked them up at dirt cheap prices on closeout since the company doesn't make ADSL modems anymore (as per their customer support).Technical customer support is great; they either solved my problems on the phone and if that didn't work, they sent someone home within a day. Not bad. Much more knowledgeable than the Verizon robotamatons in the U.S. that I used to deal with who went through the same laundry list everytime I called. Billing support is another matter. They sent me a Rs. 5000 bill for the month when I switched over from a time limited plan to the 128 unlimited plan and I had to rant and rave like crazy before they reversed the charges. I recently switched to a higher calling plan than my current one and waiting to see what will happen (clearing my vocal chords just in case). My Airtel experience in a nutshell.

Hmmm, I think what's going on is that if you go for one of the "top-up" plans you have to have a voice connection (hence the "top-up")..... but if you just go for one of the other limited plans you don't have to get that voice connection.......

Another silly little Airtel marketing policy.....

dear bro,
I too have the same router (netgear DG824M) bought from US itself, but I am not able to configure with BSNL. I know I am making some silly mistake somewhere but not able to figure out. Will you please help me out of this problem. Your assistance will be highly appreciated.
