READ THE FOLLOWING AMAZING ARTICLE This shows you the difference between concentrating on problems and concentrating on solutions. When NASA began the launch of astronauts into space, they found out that the pens wouldn't work at zero gravity. (Ink won't flow down to the writing surface) In order to solve this problem, they hired Andersen Consulting(Accenture today). It took them one decade and 12 million dollars. They developed a pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, under water, in practically any surface including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing to over 300 degrees Celsius. The Russians used a pencil.

Err, some corrections, Accenture was the tech services division that was spun off from Andersen, which continued on with its auditing practice. Andersen then ran afoul of US law and got closed down, caught red-handed trying to "advise" clients to break the law.

What isn't mentioned about that pen story is the context in which it happened.

Could it just be that there was no stringent budgetary oversight within the Apollo Space program and they could spend whatever they damn well pleased, so long as they got to the moon first. In which case calling Accenture to fix this was a great idea if only to finish the alloted budget in anticipation of more. If you don't use your alloted budget this year, guess what, you lose it and get given less the following year :)
