Reliance Communications, today initiated a radical move in the Indian telecom industry by making SMS’s more affordable to all mobile customers in India. Reliance Mobile customers can avail of two revolutionary SMS tariff plans:

o ONE PAISE PER SMS

o UNLIMITED SMS’s @ Re. 1 PER DAY

The new SMS tariff plans are add-on plans and are applicable for all Reliance Mobile customers irrespective of CDMA or GSM network as well as prepaid and postpaid customers.

The tariffs are applicable for non-commercial use only. To prevent these attractive SMS tariffs being misused by telemarketers a fair usage cap of 15000 SMS’s per month is applicable on the Unlimited SMS plan.

Earlier last month, Reliance Mobile took the lead in unveiling India’s most affordable tariff plan SIMPLY RELIANCE at a uniform rate of 50p/min for Local, STD and Roaming calls followed by uniform calling rates of 1p/sec for Local, STD and Roaming calls. Based on the usage patterns,Reliance Mobile customers can also opt for unlimited calling plans of Rs. 1 per/3 mins call for local, STD and Roaming calls.

All Reliance Mobile customers, regardless of the tariff plans they have for voice and data services, can avail of the 1p/SMS plan by subscribing to a Standard Tariff Voucher of Rs. 11 per month. Orthe unlimited SMS plan can be subscribed to by Reliance Mobile customers on a daily deduction of Re. 1 per day from their prepaid balance.

http://tr.im/ypSp if you look at the history, sms is actually free for service providers.

Looking for a data pipeline that would fit these micro messages, Hillebrand came up with the idea to harness a secondary radio channel that already existed on mobile networks.

This smaller data lane had been used only to alert a cellphone about reception strength and to supply it with bits of information regarding incoming calls. Voice communication itself had taken place via a separate signal.

\"We were looking to a cheap implementation,\" Hillebrand said on the phone from Bonn. \"Most of the time, nothing happens on this control link. So, it was free capacity on the system.\"

Initially, Hillebrand's team could fit only 128 characters into that space, but that didn't seem like nearly enough. With a little tweaking and a decision to cut down the set of possible letters, numbers and symbols that the system could represent, they squeezed out room for another 32 characters.

The next big thing should really be contract based systems like in the US where high end phones are made available at extremely affordable prices. Just imagine getting an iPhone or some other high end mobile at say 10 K for a 2 year contract with Airtel or Vodafone.

most mobiles now support larger msgs. they are actually split in 2 automatically and probably automatically merged by recipient mobile too.

airtel had specified during the launch of the iphone in india that the american model cannot be replicated here because contracts are very hard to enforce here.

it is very easy to fake identities so getting a sim on someone else' name on the contract here.

so they are going to lose out big time if they follow the same here. it sucks but that's the reality.

the problem with their offerings is that they sell locked phones at high prices which is something TRAI should look into.

if the mobile phone price is not subsidized significantly, it should not be sold locked legally.

Further modification on SMS tariff:

For Prepaid:

For Postpaid:

After TATA DoCoMo, every mobile service provider started providing 1p/sec.And now, after Reliance, I think every mobile service provider may start providing SMSs at much lower costs BENEFITING MANY PEOPLE :yahoo:

😀 Airtel had a lot of other things to say too, but look what things have come to - 1 ps/second billing, 1 ps/second roaming!, and now free SMS. The market is changing, and I am sure if any operator comes up with this contract system making high end phones affordable, it is definitely going to click.

It is also good to see Reliance giving equally good deals for postpaid customers atleast as far as the SMS packages are concerned. Postpaid customers are a neglected lot in this country.
