Don't know if this has been discussed before.I pay 300 pm to my cable operator who's provided me STB free for upfront annual payment. I get all the channels I like (or need) and lot more that I don't. If I count, there are no more than 40 odd channels that are kind of must have in my house. My question is this - does any DTH service offer me a flexibility to choose just the channels I need and pay for these and not what they think I should watch ?Been looking around almost all the DTH guys and haven't found one service which offers me this flexibility. Plus I end up paying extra for the STB et all. When it comes to consumer choice, I don't see most of the DTH guys offering what consumers need but rather what DTH providers want to sell. No wonder then that majority of cable operators are still going strong.Whats the general opinion on this ?

in my opinion all dth company are foolig people and u end up paying more then ur cable for want of just few popular channels (they lock them in packages) if u want to enjoy enjoy foreign fta channels u may buy dd direct plus and get a better disk

You are not looking at the big picture. DTH and CAS is the result of the media companies operating the channels. They want people to move to DTH or CAS or IPTV or other similar technologies. Either by choice or by force. They are the ones forcing the government to enforce CAS in the country. Government claims that CAS gives the customer the choice. The truth is... The customer is the loser in this whole situation. With cable, there are some problems. But eventually, you can bargain with the cable dude and get a better pricing. He does the dirty job of hiding the number of customers he has. With CAS, DTH, IPTV... There is no such middleman. These companies deal directly with the media companies operating the channels. They now have the power to price their channels as per their wishes. And customer is now forced to pay what they want us to pay for a particular channel. The bigger picture is simple. Everyone except the customer benefits from DTH/CAS/IPTV. You pay for every television set you have at your home. You pay for each individual channel you get (whether you want it or not). You still have no power to select and pay for individual channels.

@OP If you are talking about flexibility, all the DTH packages are the same.*You have to pay the price for better quality and more features. For me, The Time Shift feature alone is worth the higher price whether it be Tata Sky plus or be it IPTV.If you want a quality viewing experience, be prepared to pay for it. There is no such thing as a Free Lunch. 😛

time shifting ? you can get all your time shifting and dvd recording with a tv tuner card . and remember THE BEST THING IN LIFE ARE FREE:wewin:
and about free lunch then i dont think evryone should be FORCED for some expensive lunch either (espiacilly wehn you dont have much to offer in contrast with a local economical lunch (read:cable))

actually its free on airtel iptv. and its better coz u do not have to do the recording. and around 40 channels are available with 7 days recording.

The time-shifting you are referring to means having to keep the tvtuner and computer ON 24x7 in record mode. That is not practical.

And NO. The best things in Life are NOT free.

Maybe in a communist/socialist country they may be free. But, in a Capitalist society, one has to pay for stuff one wants. Especially the good stuff.
