With Bsnl launching it's unlimited plans do you think this is the end of sify? Airtel was not available in most of the areas where Sify was available but Bsnl definitely is. So do you guys think that this is the end of sify as we know it? Or mayb some people still prefer sify!!

I dont think its end of sify. Sify is not bad in all areas , it depends on CTO maintenance. In areas where it is good , people will not leave Sify as it gives you LAN to do LAN gaming and also DC++. which is not the case with BSNL. Just one good thing may happen that Sify may actually improve by putting pressure on CTO's for better LAN maintenance. Competetion is the solution to all problems you see!I have Airtel in my area and also Sify and Pacenet. But still I use Pacenet because my CTO maintains the LAN very well with negligible down time and also he attends to my complaints if any very fast (even at 11 in the nite!) and he knows his customers personally by name . So the service quality is very good . So in such cases of good CTOs Sify has no reason to fear BSNL.

Theres no BSNL here in Navi Mumbai, so its either MTNL/Iqara/Sify here. I've experienced Iqara and Sify out of the 3. Iqara was definitely the best wrt speeds and uptime, but stingy like old man Scrooge with their restrictive mb based packs. Sify has more downtime, but atleast they provide affordable "unlimited" packs. Sify will stay here, they're actually adding more customers in my area and I'm satisfied with it I guess..

But don't you think the true unlimited factor is more important here? Sify too has an unlimited plan but the upload speed is capped at 64 kbps. I think the true unlimited factor is what matters here. Plus with the introduction of this plan the economical factor has also been eliminated... Sify is not the cheapes anymore.

You found an endangered species i.e. a helpful CTO. Good for you.

The fact is that the CTO is good is due to many corporate customers on my LAN (in andheri east) as there a big commercial centre near my house and they get net from the same setup as mine. So that helps ..

I have used both sify's night 256 and purely unlimited 256 as well as 128 kb night accounts and in torrent i get upload speeds of about 17-18 KB and it can even go to 25-30 KB upload .What they say on site is the minimum and upload speed is always much higher . Besides that cto in our area is pretty good so we have very very less downtimes,dc++ (with total hub shares woth 1- 2 TB +),lan gaming and we dont pay any extra charge to cto other than packs and sify has improved alot in recent months . Even if bsnl comes i will still stick to sify if they maintain this behaviour and now only problem is they still block loads and loads of ports :(

Not a death knell unless Airtel is available in major cities like Mumbai.
