10 digits already allow for 9 billion possible phone numbers - ignoring the 0 series. I doubt our population would grow at that rate. If it does, people need to be addressed with IPs :D

But in 10 digits, first 4 digits are for operator/location, so we are left with last 6 digits. So I guess in any particular area the operator could have 999999 subscribers. What after that? In very crowded area like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai there is possibility that operator may cross 999999 subscriber limit.

If iam not mistaken BSNL also has started series with 7 in some regions already

i thought 7 series is being reserved for tele-callers now?

I think it's 70... for tele-marketers. Not sure. Someone plz confirm.

My friend got 2 new mobile connections in the past 3-4 months in chennai - Aircel & Tata Docomo both start with 77299****** & 7845****** .
