I have a problem with Airtel, it seems to resolve web addresses very slowly. Some day it is quick, other days it will take ages (often timing out) when requesting a webpage (one that was working fine the previous day, such as bbc.co.uk).My DNS server is 202.56.215.54 and 202.56.215.55I don't believe it is a bandwidth issue as when I use eMule I can download at up to 120KBps, which as I am on the 1Mbps makes sense.Speed tests also confirm the 1Mbps connection. I can ping server fine, it just seems translasting the names into IP addresses is not working, though that is only a theory and I cannot really base it on fact.It happens on both my Desktop PC and my wifes Netbook. Both have been checked for viruses. My PC is on the LAN, my wife Network on WiFi. The Netbook can stream video from the PC fine with no problems so the home network is good.Questions are:- Does anyone else have a similar problem and how are they solving it?- How to prove the fault? I can take a wire shark trace, but am at a loss when it comes to analysisng it - can anyone help!I have tried contacting Airtel, but they just tell me there is probably a virus on my PC 😡 If there is it is well burried......Any one help out there?

The first thing you can do to see if it is this particular DNS server is trying out another one such as OpenDNS.
http://www.opendns.com/

Also, trying running a tracert to any particular address and see if there is any congestion along the way.

I believe I can help you make some sense out of wireshark results, feel free to post them here.

Thanks for the quick reply, I can post a wireshark trace tonight and will post the results later tonight (or email then - whichever is easier). What is tracert? If you have some more detail I'll see what I can do there. I shall try the open DNS and see how that goes. Should hopefully be able to post back later tonight. Thanks!

The tracert command is used to determine the path taken by a particular network packet to reach it's destination.

This site should help you understand how it works
Using Tracert

Try tracing any particular web address you are having trouble with
for eg, you can try tracert www.bbc.co.uk

@imagegril1.try opendns 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.2222. Check Mod mode selected. GDMT preferred.3. Post Statistics/ADSL data SNR/ATTN/Line speed and mod selected ONLY.

Well, tracert showed this:C:\>tracert broadbandforum.coTracing route to broadbandforum.co [72.18.140.130]over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1 2 34 ms * 36 ms ABTS-North-Static-173.220.160.122.airtelbroadband.in [122.160.220.173] 3 33 ms 33 ms 41 ms ABTS-North-Static-246.220.160.122.airtelbroadband.in [122.160.220.246] 4 33 ms 35 ms 33 ms ABTS-North-Static-174.230.160.122.airtelbroadband.in [122.160.230.174] 5 33 ms 34 ms 34 ms 125.19.22.145 6 90 ms 90 ms 89 ms 203.101.95.30 7 304 ms 304 ms 300 ms so-4-3-0.edge2.LosAngeles1.Level3.net [4.78.198.17] 8 304 ms 305 ms 307 ms vlan69.csw1.LosAngeles1.Level3.net [4.68.20.62] 9 303 ms 303 ms 308 ms ae-93-93.ebr3.LosAngeles1.Level3.net [4.69.137.45] 10 317 ms 324 ms 324 ms ae-2.ebr3.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.69.132.9] 11 316 ms 308 ms 323 ms ae-73-73.csw2.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.69.134.230] 12 318 ms 324 ms 325 ms ae-72-72.ebr2.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.69.134.213] 13 357 ms 361 ms 361 ms ae-3.ebr1.Denver1.Level3.net [4.69.132.58] 14 348 ms 349 ms 350 ms ae-11-53.car1.Denver1.Level3.net [4.68.107.70] 15 341 ms 343 ms 338 ms HANDY-NETWO.car1.Denver1.Level3.net [4.79.81.238] 16 344 ms 357 ms 342 ms vlan33.core2.denver2.wehostwebsites.com [72.18.143.133] 17 346 ms 350 ms 349 ms vlan77.sw1-c3.denver2.wehostwebsites.com [72.18.143.187] 18 346 ms 345 ms 342 ms 72-18-140-130.dnvco.webbytech.biz [72.18.140.130]It was always the slowest at point 2 no matter which website I chose.I took a wireshark trace also getting to this site if someone could help examine it 🙂@essbebe, what is Mod Mode? and what does "Post Statistics/ADSL data SNR/ATTN/Line speed and mod selected ONLY" mean, I'm not sure how to go about getting these.Sorry for being ignorant, but internet troubleshooting is very new to me but I do appreciate your help!

What he means is to open up your beetel modem/router configuration page by typing in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser and accessing the ADSL statistics, where it will show information such as SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio), ATTN (Attenuation), Line speed (upload/download speed of your line) and mod mode (modulation mode your modem is operating with), of which G.DMT is one that supports up to 8mbps/1mbps speeds. You can look up these terms on the internet if you want to know more about them.

The page looks something like this

Also, your trace looked ok, doesn't look like there is any real packet loss along the way. Post your wireshark results anyway I suppose..

Also, what browser are you using? In firefox you can configure the browser to optimize page loading times, which might help. This can be done manually or by using the fasterfox plugin (http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/)

Oh, sorry I forgot to mention that..haven't used that in a long time. Doesn't matter too much, the manual approach is quite easy as well.

Tried Firefox and open DNS put result no better!

Sent wireshark trace to thesilentshadow so let see what that gives 😱

Download speeds are indeed fine and having tried the open DNS I am satisfied that it is not an Airtel DNS issue.Perhaps a better description would be slow browsing experience. Actually, painfully slow and sometimes none existent browsing experience.Maybe it is down to a modem issue, let see how that works. I need to prove that so I can convince Airtel to get me a new one.....The netbook is going to be tried on another wifi connection just to confirm the netbook is not the problem....
