Hi Friends, I have this BSNL 500 Home plan....and it happened that, i downloaded files around 600MB, between 2:15 am and 7:45 am on Mar 9, and unfortunately it has been counted in the usage 🙁 ... Although it shows as 0 in the last column (Traffic(KB)(excluding night unlimited[For HOME 500/1000/1800/3300 plan only])) It has been added in the total usage which shows at the top...Total Send Volume(GB) Total Receive Volume(GB) Total Volume(GB) Total Duration(hour) 0.305 1.203 1.508 148.26 I called up the help line number 16004241600 in bangalore and those guys told me that, if i download a file it will be charged...but, if browse any website, it wont be charged!!! I CANT BELIEVE THIS !!. I dont think the bsnl is so intellingent to prevent files from downloading and just give the access to browse websites .....In that case, what does "UNLIMITED DOWNLOAD" mean?I did try to search some of the postings in this forum, which are related to the same kind of issue...but i am not able to clearly understand....as some say, even though it is added, it wont come in the bill. Some say, they have been charged thousands of rupees...Please advice me!!Thanks in advance for your help- rajita.

Don't belive what 16004241600 says....................If you think you have been charged for night time.......go and contact the BDO in the head office in your area...........could help you if you were from kolkata.........our city BDO ......knows me well now.....(because of the thrashing I give him every time the connection is down:lol🙂

Even though the traffic shows 0, but the data downloaded will be added to your usage because it shows the total amount of data transfer. But it will not be billed. If you are billed, then file a complaint. Don't trust 16004241600 as kambui said. I believe you don't need to do anything here but you may contact BSNL.

Rightly said dont trust BSNL. I was in same situation as you when I got my connection. BSNL guys told me that no such thing called 'Night Unlimited' existed.

Dont worry rajita, it wont be charged . I just cant beleive what the cc said, how can they be so ignorant...This is the funniest thing i have heard...browsing wont be charged but downloading will...ROFL

also, believe it or not, best of the CC guys (whichever ISP it is) DO NOT know that there's really not much of a difference in browsing and downloading...and it's quite difficult to monitor what you're downloading and what you're browsing...so stay cool!!!

Yep...Just keeping my fingers crossed, and waiting for the bill...Thanks all, for your time and quick reply! 🙂

If somebody is downloading then the data is much higher than browsing...simple isnt it....lol

well mate, one can even browse as much as download in an hr...it just depends on what u're browsing...and secondly, i don't think they'd have a team setup just to watch everyone's usage 😛

Exactly.Browsing porn can add the numbers quite higher than file downloads.And.... God knows why ppl in India take the word "download" to mean P2P. When your browsing also, you ARE downloading! You're just dl'ing htm/jpg files instead, thats the only diff....

true. i hate when people leave comments on the broadband blog that xyz ISP counts surfing in downloading 😱if that was not the case, i had surf pr0n all day long on a bsnl line with 512K speed 😉

But this tiny difference is significant in terms of billing.

I surfed all day long this weekend.. and net usage is :

3/11/06 - 32 MB
3/12/06 - 50 MB

While if I am "downloading" then I will consume that amount in less then an hour.

that's fine shamit...that's what we all r discussing...if someone wants, browsing can also be equivalent to downloading...also, you're saying u browsed...what if the ISP says you downloaded and charges you for it, how can you prove them wrong??? 😛so downloading and browsing r same as far as data download is concerned...
