Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) LAUNCHES IPTV SERVICE under the Brand Name of “WICE TV” IN AHMEDABAD
The Bharat Sanchar Nigum Limited (BSNL) is launching Multiplay Services in Ahmedabad from 1 October 08 in association with the franchise, The consortium of MKCL, Wice Net Ltd and Divinet Access Technology Ltd. The service will be offered to Broadband subscribers in Ahmedabad under the brand name “WICE.TV”. Ahmadabad will be the first city in Gujarat to offer Triple Play services on telecom broadband platform. After the trial phase, the consortium expects geometric growth in subscribers through its spread to other major cities of Gujarat.
IPTV is one of the most discussed value added service on Telecom Broadband infrastructure. IPTV which is an acronym for Internet Protocol Television is many times misunderstood as Internet TV. Though IPTV is delivered through the broadband (largely on ADSL) infrastructure it does not uses Internet and cannot be accessed unless subscribed for the service
In this service the television channels are encoded in IP format and delivered to TV using IPTV set top box called ‘WICE.box’ in digital format giving unparallel clarity and viewing experience.
In addition to giving 100+ TV channels, WICE TV also gives many additional services like, Video on Demand, which is similar to watching video CD / DVD using VCD/DVD players, satellite based regional radio services, Games. Etc., The Personal Video Recorder (PVR) is a feature, where customer can choose to record the channels in his absence for later viewing is added attraction in the offering.
A distinctive application; Interactive Education (Virtual Classroom) whereby a teacher can teach remotely to many students through TV. Interactive education is the unique service offered first time in the world by ‘WICE TV’ only. Many more applications will be added in the near future.
With the launch of Multiplay services, the consumers of IPTV would be able to access three communication mediums, telephony, internet and television through existing single telephone line. All three services can be used simultaneously without any interference to each other.
The unique feature of the technology is the support for “Interactive” services. The competing technologies like Cable, DTH, Terrestrial Etc., cannot Support this because of no or limited talk back capabilities.
The tariff will be as published by BSNL for these services and the payment is required to be made to BSNL in their regular monthly bill. There will be separate item in the bill for the use of IPTV services.
