The second beta of this office suite, which competes with Microsoft Office, was launched on September 1 and the final has been awaited by the consumer base since a long time. Stefan Taxhet, one of the developers said on his Blog post: “It would have been nice to release OpenOffice.org 2.0 at the 13th of October. But in the last minute a serious showstopper (#i55330#) has been brought up. In a discussion on IRC, we agreed that this is reason enough to start work on RC3.”

This major upgrade would be the first one of the version history of this office suite to produce the new XML-based standard ODF (OpenDocument format). This format has been sanctioned internationally only last May by OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards).

The OpenOffice.org Project has finally launched the latest iteration of their office suite application the OpenOffice.org 2.0. This update was delayed last week when a critical show-stopping bug was discovered and they decided to fix it before releasing it in the public. OpenOffice 2.0 adds new feature to this office suite, which the group claim will resonate with users from business and government’s right down to the home desktop.
It has been released for a range of operating systems ranging from Windows to Linux to Mac OS. This project is handled by a community made up of independent programmers and is supported by corporate entities like Sun Microsystems, Novell, Red Hat, Debian, and Intel. Since the last six months, the open source organization had been testing beta versions of this update in the public.

The last I heard, nobody really cared about OOXML. Now perhaps the organizations which have tried to switch over to open systems will take a look at it. This means more interoperability between M$ and Linux, which is a good thing. Yay!
