Chandhok denies funding claims

Karun Chandhok has hit back at claims the group behind next year's inaugural Indian Grand Prix is also funding his 2010 seat with the HRT team.

When F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone recently hailed this year's debut of the Indian driver, he also pointed out that "we will have an Indian GP thanks to the Jaypee Group in 2011". Jaypee, an Indian industrial conglomerate, is constructing a Hermann Tilke-designed F1 circuit about 40km from the capital New Delhi.

We need some great humility in this race - di Montezemolo
F1 Grand Prix, GP Australia, Albert Parkau

While the team is already at work in Melbourne, where the Australian GP will be held this weekend, Scuderia Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo spoke with the official website of the Maranello-based outfit.

Di Montezemolo: "We need some great humility in this race. We know that we have to work and there is still lots to be improved, such as performance and reliability: it's important to stay realistic. In Melbourne it will be fundamental to have a good qualifying on Saturday, because as usual on city circuits, also here in Australia to start from the front will determine the final outcome."

Rubens Barrichello fears fellow old head Michael Schumacher has "more to lose than gain" if his decision to return to racing was motivated by anything other than his love of the sport.

Following a three-year hiatus the 41-year-old was back on the grid with Mercedes at the season-opening race in Bahrain earlier this month and finished in a creditable sixth place.

Schumacher had declared at the start of the year that he believes he can challenge for an eighth world title and though Barrichello believes the German can be competitive, the Williams driver warned he should not expect to pick up immediately from where he left off.

Schumi not surprised by expectations

Thursday, 25 March 2010 07:02

Michael Schumacher says he understands why his comeback was regarded as an anti-climax by some, but says he always knew he would need some time to readjust to Formula 1.

The seven times world champion qualified seventh and finished sixth in Bahrain, his first grand prix since the end of 2006, and was slightly slower than Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg throughout the Sakhir weekend.

Sebastian Vettel and Fernando AlonsoFernando Alonso concedes that Red Bull has the fastest car at the start of this season, but believes he can still win this weekend's Australian Grand Prix.

The 2005 and '06 world champion had no answer for Sebastian Vettel's pace in the early part of the race in Bahrain two weeks ago, but inherited the victory when the Red Bull suffered an exhaust failure.

Kubica sets early pace in Melbourne

Friday, 26 March 2010 03:15

Renault’s Robert Kubica was the surprise pacesetter in Friday’s first practice session at a sunny Albert Park, shading Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg by 0.2s.

Potentially large differences in fuel loads once again made the times hard to interpret meaningfully, but Kubica and Rosberg were among the quickest throughout and both appeared to have well-balanced cars around the tricky low-grip parkland circuit.

Friday, 26 March 2010 07:13

Lewis Hamilton headed a McLaren one-two in a rain-affected second practice session at Albert Park.

Intermittent light rain made it difficult for the drivers to establish a rhythm, but Hamilton and team-mate Jenson Button made the most of an early dry spell to stamp their authority.

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Friday, March 26th 2010, 07:56 GMT

Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Australian GPFernando Alonso admitted teams are likely to go into the Australian Grand Prix unsure about the tyre performance following a rain-hit practice on Friday.

The cooler than expected temperatures, together with the rain that hindered teams in the second session, meant tyre testing was not significant, with hotter temperatures expected for the race.

Schu optimistic about Mercedes's form

Friday, 26 March 2010 00:00

Michael Schumacher believes Mercedes has reasons to be optimistic about its W01’s potential in Australia after ending the disrupted opening day near the top of the times.

With the opening session at Albert Park punctured by two red flag periods, and the second on-off rain showers, Schumacher was only able to complete 35 laps in total on his first day of driving at the bumpy circuit since 2006.

Haha, Rosberg again faster than MS.This time Massa is behind Alonso, lets see if he can pass him. But he is on same side as Alonso, last time Alonso was on the cleaner side.
