Hard disk of my PC went Kaput yesterday. Was lucky engough that nothing importent was lost.Planning to buy a new IDE disk of 160 GB. Anybody has idea about cost of the same. Ebay has a price of 3.5k. But that seems high since I bought 80 GB HDD last month at my HomeTown for 2.1k.

I have two 160GB western digitals...for sale..mostly used as backup....too bad we don't live in the same city.if its any help i picked up a 250Gb for around Rs.4000 in June. The same was Rs.1000 more in only Feb.so i think Rs. 3-3500 is prolly the range ur looking at for brand new 160GB.

160 GB seagate with 2 mb buffer Sata2 with NCQ = Rs.3100Dont go for Samsung . I have a 80 GB samsung sata and 160 GB seagate sata . Samsung has 8 mb buffer and seagate has 2 mb buffer . Seagate HD is much better . My seagate 160 runs at 40-41 deg celsius ( os installed on it )while samsung never comes below 45 degree . All speed test i did shows that my seagate hard disk is little faster than samsung one ( in read speed as well as write ) .

the one i am talking abt is also seagate barracuda ( they are available in sata ) . Its pretty good HD :) . Strange .. ubuntu runs out of box with my sata drives if not in hardware raid .If your mobo supports sata 2 ( most new mobo does ) then dont go for pata drives ever .. sata 2 drives are much faster . If mobo is little old and supports only sata 1 then its as good as a pata drive . HD's are backward compatible like sata 2 drive will run in mobo which do not have sata 2 support ( it will run on sata 1 though ) so no risk in buying them .

Thanks for the input guys.My PC is 4 year old Athlon 2400 qith 1 GB RAM. Does not have RAID or SATA support. I had been putting off upgrade since it worked decent enough for developing hobbiest websites + email/ net usage.Looks like Seagate 160 GB (EIDE a.k.a PATA) is the way to go.Trouble is in Mumbai, I can't find it at a decent price and actual hardware market (lemington road) is 4 hours drive from my place :(Does anyone know a shop that sells hardware at a decent price in Malad/Goregaon ?

Thats the price (~ 3k ) I was expecting. Not getting that price in Mumbai. One good thing is, I found out that I can discard most of the data and can live wihtout it. Only importent thing was my email folder that has emails from 96 onwards. So I am using my laptop till I get the PC to work.Have now uploaded all of them to GMail. MTNL's free upload and GMails 2.7 GB mailbox helps a lot ;)With all that I can put off this purchase till I visit my HomeTown next time. What irks me is the tendecy of shopkeepers here to charge higher then rest of India.

There have been reports recently of some users losing ALL the mail in Gmail - So dont rely so much on it.

Yaa I have multiple copies of them. Yahoo/GMail/Hotmail all have had cases of accounts being emptied.

I got 160 GB EIDE HDD for 3200 here. Seems that PC has developed some other problems as well :( . So, at present all my data is on net.
