(Financial Express via NewsEdge) Intel has announced plans to launch a trial phase of broadband Internet over power lines in India in the next eight weeks.

If successful, broadband over power lines could make Internet available to the masses, making it cheaper, faster and readily available to users in far-flung areas where fiber-optic cables cannot be laid, the company said.

The technology, first introduced on a trial-basis in US in 2004, was launched in Europe in August this year. It is in a two-month trial phase in Austria, Spain, Italy and Portugal where speeds of more than 200 Mbps have been achieved.

The technology was also launched by Comtec in the US recently.

"Most of the technical issues that were coming in the way of delivering Internet over power lines have been largely addressed. We will link up with our India team in the next eight weeks to begin trials," said Donald MacDonald, Intel VP. Aside from Intel, other partners in the home plug power line alliance are Cisco, Comsat, General Electric, Sony and Sharp.

8 Weeks to trials...seems to me its been on trial since 2002.does anyone know whether BPL has been sucessfully rolled out anywhere in the world to any significant extent ?i'm convinced it's not there yet.
 
would it last for long?i mean when we shift to say renewalbe sources of electricity .. say solar power.. then where would power lines come into picture? unless ya electricity generated through solar energy is transmitted through power lines 😛anyways. 8 weeks. hmm .. also btw. if the light goes off. then do we still get internet 😛 ... most areas got load shedding problems nah ..
 
i just hope they are doin the trails to launch the service at some point in india.hope we don't see 64kbps super broadband speeds on this thing.
 

nah... it wouldnt make sense to provide 64kbps speeds over power lines... plus the investment might be huge..and in a broadband starved country 64 kbps no one would take cause cable operators already provide it..hmm.. but 200 mbps yai think they would rather settle for something like 10-50 mbps.. once tests, trials etc are done. and they launch the BB service.. hmmand there would def be many many takers for it.. 😀
 
i dont know..why corprates are so obsessed with providing tech to "far- flung" areas...when they have not been able to provide it in "not so far flung" areas
 
Exactly.. Y are they talking of getting wimax to rural areas when we, in metropolitans, are not getting choice of more than 2-3 major Broadband ISPs! Actually most ppl only have one crappy ISP to stick to!
 
Does anyone know what kind of speeds, one could expect with Wi-Max ?Intel has a better chance of selling it here than in the developed world since we lack the infrastructure they have.
 
max speeds Wi max is capable of right now is 70 Mbps! Thats a thing of the future! But right now Wi max offerings will probably 1 to 2 Mbps as startup and md range plans! Depend opn when its rolled out! If its comin soon, they'll start with 256 kbps.. Coz thats what the compitetors offer on DSL, etc...
 
NEC Corp. has announced that they plan to soon launch laptop products based on the Intel Corp.’s Yonah dual-core mobile processor. Yonah is the next generation mobile processor technology from the microprocessor giants Intel and they come with two cores instead of a single core like current generation Pentium M processors.

Intel plans to commercially launch the Yonah range of processors sometime next month. Yonah is also expected to take much of the limelight as the main processor release from their manufacturers in 2006. NEC has announced their Lavie RX LR900 laptop, which would be powered by this new processor.

w00t! This is gonna kick some AMD butt! 😀 As it is, Intel still remains unchallenged in the mobile computing arena. Lets see what AMD rolls out to compete with Yonah!
