Though he could try upgrading his firmware to dd-wrt,it might help..but that depends on version number of router...

Did your friend buy the Netgear WNR612 ? Im getting it for 949 on Flipkart. I have very good experience with Netgear. One of my routers have been working since the last 7 years 24x7.
But this one doesn't have an antenna. Can you confirm if there are any connection drops or any other problem?
