GPS on Feature Phones made mandatory by Department of Telecommunications

Well if GPS is installed which means there should be software which tracks the phone.

Which means that feature phone no more remains feature phone,

it also means that these handsets would have poorer battery life. the whole concept is idiotic. one would have accepted these changes if the government had put up a comprehensive system to retrieve stolen handsets. but this is more about surveillance and not consumer protection.

It means no one to fck against govt.
And we'll be in power every-time like we did in Gujarat for past 4-5 regimes.
Loopholes left by congress are exploited to fullest by current regime.

i guess it's good that we do have relatively free internet and the ability to use e2e encrypted calls, messaging and video conferencing. journalists are already switching to signal for communicating with each other. people would too eventually.

actually they have removed gps requirement for feature phones in the revised notification. it is only mandatory for smartphones now instead of all mobile phones.

4. GPS in new mobile hand set.- With effect from the 1st January, 2018, no mobile phone handset manufactured
company shall sell the new mobile phone hand set in India without the facility of identifying the location
through Satellite based GPS
