Air India News & Updates

Lol anyone can be a frequent flier with air india

In a first for Indian aviation, you may soon be able to surf the net while flying. State-owned Air India is planning to have Wi-Fi on both its wide body and narrow body planes that are used for international and domestic flights, respectively, for a fee. The world's leading in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) company, Thales of France, has been asked to make a presentation to AI management at the earliest. "Thanks to our brand new planes, we have the youngest average age of 3.5 for an aircraft in India. The old gen A-320s are being phased out. The new fleet should have the latest technology like Wi-Fi and we are working towards that," said an official. "All this is fine. But AI must improve its on time performance (OTP). The first thing passengers want is that their flight departs and arrives on time. Everything else is secondary. AI's OTP is among the lowest in the country. It should improve its punctuality and then look at other fancier stuff," said an industry observer who did not wish to be named.

In his first meeting with aviation ministry heads on June 21, 2014 — less than a month after taking office — Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the aam aadmi must replace the Maharajah as the mascot of Indian aviation. It came on the back of his emphasis that the ministry formulating policies to make flying within the reach of the common man and not limited only to the rich.

Since AI is symbolized by the Maharajah and could not be retired, the company has decided to tweak his image to make it more in tune with the changed times. "The new Maharajah is aligned with the modern times and with the new AI which is also trying to cut flab to become a lean commercial entity. The Maharajah now has a leaner, young, sporty and more dynamic look. He has made a big comeback in our ad campaigns. We are using 27 different pictures of the new Maharajah to showcase some of the destinations we fly to," a senior AI official who handled the Maharajah's makeover said. Among his avatars, the new Maharajah will be seen as a fighting fit member of the Indian cricket team wowing everyone with his stroke play.

If Air India flight follow their timing and remove their arrogant employees (Aunties), it can become successful Airline 🙂

This is the problem right there. Senior AI official saw over this initiative. New mascot looks so gross.

as someone joked on twitter. the new dude looks like the tout that you are told to avoid outside ticket booking centers.

I hope they dont phase out the old mascot.

Old mascot meant that by flying AI, you are treated royally..like a king. While in realty that is debatable but atleast the branding looked good.

Now,look at him

Yep I liked that Mascot since childhood!

Just like @dextermorgan said, it always made me think - "I want to fly in this airline once!"

National carrier Air India and state-run telecom company MTNL have joined the list of sick central public sector enterprises (CPSEs), the government told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. It also said that five CPSEs, including three units of Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) will be shut soon. Minister of state for heavy industries Anant Geete said there were 65 units in the list of sick public sector units (PSUs) as of March 31, 2014.

"The reasons for their sickness vary from enterprise to enterprise and included obsolete plants and machinery, heavy interest burden, resource crunch, surplus manpower and shortage of working capital," he said. The government has budgeted Rs 3,205 crore for infusion into Air India in FY16 compared with Rs 6,380 crore in the current fiscal.

A CPSE is declared sick after it has accumulated losses in any financial year equal to 50% or more of its average net worth during four preceding years. The accumulated losses of Air India stood at Rs 5,388.82 crore in 2013-14, as against Rs 5,490 crore in 2012-13 and Rs 7,559 crore in 2011-12. MTNL posted a profit of Rs 7,821 crore in 2013-14, mainly due to exceptional items—or write back of provisions on account of pensionary liabilities and spectrum amortization costs—of Rs 11,621 crore.
