Apparently GSMA has launched their own authentication system and it is already supported by six mobile operators in India.

Mobile Connect is a new service that lets you login to websites and apps on any device without having to remember usernames or passwords. You are safely identified through your mobile phone number.

enabled it on my phone and logged into airtel selfcare to test it out. you get a ussd message where you can submit 1 to enable login. pretty cool.

plus god knows if they would start charging for this as well lol.
