It looks closer than ever. GM has launched the model, which should land up next year in India as the Chevrolet Matiz (or Spark) at the Geneva Salon. It is quite different from the original Daewoo Matiz, which was a favorite amongst its owners in India. It would let GM enter the big volume segment of small cars in India as they struggle to sell large numbers of their relatively expensive models. On the other hand, it would bring back the memories of the beloved Matiz to the Indian automobile lovers. It was made possible after General Motors took over Daewoo sometime back. The car however is based on the platform on which the original model was manufactured. The size is relatively similar though the front of the car has new outlook to give it a fresh outlook.GM is offering the car in the competitive markets of Europe with two engine options in 800cc and 1000 cc model. However, India should get the 1-liter model considering the competition from Hyundai Santro, Maruti Zen/Wagon R is quite potent to this little beauty from GM. Impressively the engine range for Matiz is Euro-4 compliant, which means that the car is quite ready for the future pollution emission standards. In fact, Daewoo cars were capable of passing the pollution norms of today when it was first launched in India way back in the 1990s. This tells the technological advancements Daewoo had but failed to capitalize in huge markets such as India. GM with all their financial assets and expertise in managing the corporations can make it big provided they can price the car right when it is launched in India!

GM has had an interesting ride in the Indian market. They came in through the Opel brand with the fantastic Astra. It was followed by Corsa and its variants. In the later days, the company found little volume so they introduced the famous Chevy brand in the form of Chevrolet Forrester. It was followed by Chevrolet Tavera and Optra and now the latest news in is that they might be considering bringing in the hatch and saloon versions of the Chevy Aveo to the Indian market!

A lot of it is based on their buying the Daewoo brand, which sold the awesome Matiz car in the Indian market. It gave GM access to many potential best selling vehicles to the American automotive giant which are optimized for the Asian markets. Indian auto magazines have reportedly received a lot of scoop shots of the Chevy Aveo being tested on the Indian roads and a 2006 launch is quite a possibility.

General Motors is struggling in its domestic market United States but is planning to unleash a number of new models in the coming days in the Indian market. The company has planned as many as five models in the next 2 years and has already started to raise the production capacities from 60,000 to 80,000 units per annum at their Halol plant.

The new GMIL president and MD Rajeev Chaba announced these plans in a recent conversation with media personals. He also claimed that the company has spent most of the Rs 1400 crore expansion kitty already and is looking forward to exciting times in the Indian auto industry.

The expansion plans in their production facility included updates to their plastic paint shop, the assembly body shop, and some utilities. The company would now be focusing towards launching at least two new products every year from now on. This might include some of the luxury car models as they have seen the success of brands like Mercedes and BMW in the Indian market.

General Motors has had a rough ride in the Indian market. Their Opel range of cars was seldom upgraded and was too expensive to lure the Indian customers. As a result, the company decided to launch the cheaper vehicles from their other brands under the highly regarded Chevrolet brand name and the results are showing.

The company yesterday announced that they have recorded a growth rate of 27 per cent in year-to-date (YTD) sales and has sold 23,542 cars between January and September this year. This improved performance is mostly due to their multi utility vehicle (MUV) Chevrolet Tavera which has seen sales of 21,960 cars since its mid-2004 launch.

wow 2nd US company posting heavy losses!

I don't know what this car is going to look like, but I think GM should bring in a Spark with much lesser displacement or possibly a lighter powertrain. They have to maintain the Spark's virtues like space, comfort and looks, and introduce a 800cc or so engine. I don't think they can price it at 2 lakh, but around 2.50 lakh is definitely possible.

The last thing one would want it is a Chinese car (GM has stake in a Chinese company 'Wuling' which I believe was told to develop something for $2,500 a year and a half back). Just like how GM is manufacturing the 'Agile' for South America, a car needs to be developed in India for developing markets, that will sit below the Agile.

Why would they even think they can get 10% all on a sudden by 2010? Tata and Hyundai, who share the 2nd and 3rd spots for sales, are around 15% each. With Maruti at a little over 50%, that leaves 20% of the market, of which GM wants 10%. With what? Spark?

actually they set the target a couple of years ago. spark helped the cause. they have a new small car coming up later this year which would be priced below spark. that would be a mass selling vehicle. next year the new spark would come and with a 1 liter diesel engine too. that would definitely boost their sales. GM is actually doing very well in india compared to how they were doing a couple of years back. 🙂

Relatively, yes. The massive price cuts on Spark did help. But to really be able to get volumes, these guys need more service centers - far more than they have now - and definitely more sales centers. Some areas don't have a GM showroom for hundreds of kilometers.

wow, i didn't know maruti had 50% market share, is it completely suzuki owned or does govt still control a part of it?

It is primarily an Indian company. The govt has sold most [or all - not sure about this] of its stake over the years. Works very similar to the Hero - Honda relationship.

but suzuki owns majority in it from what i know. that's why new models use the suzuki logo instead of the maruti logo on the grill and the steering.
