Opposition political parties like PMK and Congress termed fares of Chennai Metro Rail, which was inaugurated by chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday, as very high. They demanded that Chennai Metro Rail reduce the fares.
In a statement, PMK leader S Ramadoss demanded the central and state governments ask Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) to reduce the fares.
Ramadoss said the Chennai Metro ticket fare was 250% higher than that of Delhi Metro. "The minimum fare in Delhi is only Rs 8 whereas in Chennai the minimum fare is Rs 10. Similarly, the fare for a 10km travel in Delhi is only Rs 16. However, in Chennai, it has been fixed at Rs 40," he pointed out.
He said it would cost only Rs 30 to travel the same distance on an MTC airconditioned bus.
The PMK leader said the Metro Rail should be a service for the people and it should not be commercialized.
