What ONT do I use with BSNL FTTH?

My local BSNL SDO gave me a very (VERY!) basic ONT - the ancient Nokia Siemens H640V-G25E.

I'm on 100 Mbps and I only get around 90 Mbps (not much of a difference but I'm a networking geek, so I need everything perfect).

I looked around and the Huawei HG8310M seems like a good option. I don't need anything fancy, just something with a gigabit port that I can bridge to my Asus AC88U router.

Are there any other options? I looked at Indian options such as Netlink and Syrotech (which has no straightforward way of actually buying???), but I'd like to know how the experience of users here has been with configuration and use of these brands.

Also, I understand that I'd need the VLAN value from the LCO. Any other configuration tips for a smooth setup?

The Nokia ONT comes with a fast-ethernet port and not gigabit?

When going for the Huawei, do confirm whether the OLT is using EPON or GPON cause the HG8310M supports only GPON, you'd need the HG8010 if you need EPON.

You could purchase Netlink devices online, their basic device is ONT-GPON-NETLINK SECURE ONT BEST SECURE FIREWALL USED

Netlink works fine as a dumb modem, haven't come across any issues. It's just some rebranded device from a Chinese OEM.

Do note that in some deployments the ONT needs to be whitelisted on the OLT so you might need to co-ordinate with BSNL/LCO for the new ONT to start working.

@varkey

Yes, it has only FE ports, not GE. My local SDO does need MAC binding on the OLT, but it's not an issue for me since I am almost friends with the BSNL technician after so many years of connection, it'll be done within 30 mins. Would I also need to get the VLAN value from him? I'll have a look at the Netlink website, thanks!

@BSNL_Loyalist did you set your connection..? I had my LCO charging so darn high from the exchange...like around 9k for 240m of wirefrom (exchange to home) I tried contacting the bsnl exchange tried asking jto and divisional engineer to reduce the rate but no way that LCO guy is reducing his fee.. 😐😐
Did you get the Netlink modem? It wasn't available on website so I called crt shop in kerala they provide the modem for around 1.7k including shipping. The same modem is being sold by my LCO for 3k 😂😂 freaking a***hole.

It seems like the LCO is a total a**hole.
100 metre ofc is like 800 bucks wholesale.
In retail it's about ₹12/metre.

Its just this one a**hole there is another guy who is over here who told he could do it for much less but he is having some other problem with bsnl guys.. I guess they will learn thier lessons when Jio comes next month.. 😂.
And yeah he is asking this 30 to 35₹ for maintaining the line. As if he comes everyday to check if the fiber, he laid is proper or not. 🙄🙄,

If there are no other customers on the path and the fibre is being laid just for you, then maintenance is actually something you need to consider. Depending on the area, there would always be situations where a tree or something falls on it and the cable breaks.

For me this has happened atleast twice over the last 4 months or so since I got the connection. It's not really the LCOs fault but the area is that way.

Is the 9k including the cost of ONT or just for the wiring?
