Upgrading to 16Mbps needs an upgrade of my Beetel 110TC1 modem

Hi all,Great forum! I just upgraded from a 4Mbps plan to a 16Mbps one (yey!) but since thats been done I got frequent disconnects. After pestering Airtel to come and check it, they finally said that the modem is old/faulty and would need to be upgraded to a Beetel 220BX1. I haven't been able to confirm this since there are no specs of 110TC1 available online. I essentially have 2 questions:* Is the upgrade necessary? Does the 110TC1 not support 16Mbps downstream speeds?* If I do have to upgrade which one would you recommend since Airtel told me that as the 110TC1 is not in warranty and I would have to buy one? I would only want the modem and not a Modem+Router since I have a Asus N66U on the way (yey!)Appreciate the help.Thanks!
 
right. get a good quality third party modem considering airtel has outsourced modems and routers division and getting them through beetel makes no sense.
 
It supports ADSL2+ so technically it should support 16mbps but then the quality of beetel modems is abysmal. Maybe the hardware isnt physically capable of higher speeds even though it supports the standard. If you are buying a new one, you can checkout the D-Link 2520u or the TP-Link TD-8817. Both cost around a thousand bucks, decent quality.
 
Thanks for the quick response folks. I am going to go with the D-Link just cause of the brand name unless someone has opinions about the two of them.
 
righto. airtel charge i believe 500 bucks for their lowest end modem. so 1000 bucks for a better brand and model is a pretty cool deal. though you would have to be lucky to get an engineer who would set up a third party modem for you. i am not sure if all of them are smart enough to handle third party modems as they are probably trained to setup the models they themselves offer.
 
I wouldn't really bank on an Airtel engineer to set this up for me. I'd just go ahead and do it myself with the help of the posts around here. I know a thing or two about networking so I ain't too worried 😉
 

lol. i guess you can save the settings from the current model and that should be enough data. i can configure my wireless router but airtel's modem? it is usually a nightmare.they just get another excuse in case their connection is causing troubles for you. it is very easy to say that your third party modem is faulty or even incompatible if they are running out of excuses. 😕
 
I hear ya! I literally have no other choice at this point since the Airtel guy did tell me to go out and buy another one 🙂 and I don't have the motivation nor the inclination to hunt for a Beetel 220BXI in Bangalore. 😀
 
UPDATE: The Airtel guy replaced a temporary 220BX for testing. Everything seems to be in order apart from the 16Mbps speed. It hovers at around 14 and I think my router is to be blamed. So I am guessing I will have to go for an upgrade on the modem no matter.Thanks for all the help folks!
 
I am on 16mbps plan and even my speed hovers around 14. I am having Beetel 450Bx1 modem. I guess that is the speed that you get on 16mbps plan
 
Hi,Has a new modem fixed the issue for you? I've been having frequent disconnects since last week when I switched to 16mbps from 4. Had no issues before. I'm on a 220 BXI already, although it is about 5-6 years old.The airtel guy is suspecting modem/splitter/cabling although I have a feeling its the modem and heat related as it disconnects after heavy usage often, but sometimes even randomly while idle.Anyway, let me know if a new modem fixed the issue for you and if you have any recommendation - I'm looking at the TP-Link 8817 at this point.Cheers,Carthik
